SOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.
HISTORICAL SKETCH.
" IT being deemed expedient, on the ground of their better accommodation, by some members of the First Congregational Church in North Bridgewater, who resided in the south part of the town, to organize a new Church among themselves,-accordingly, on December 19, 1836, Dea. SILVANUS FRENCH, and twenty-one others, whose names stand first on the Cata- logue, members of the First Congregational Church in North Bridgewater, made application to be dismissed from that Church, with suitable testimonials, to be organized into a separate Church, to be formed on similar principles, and to adopt the same or a similar creed, with the First Church in North Bridgewater. This request was complied with, and a Council was invited to organize the new Church, which convened at the house of Josiah W. Kingman, on Tuesday, January 3, 1837 ; at which time and place, the organ- ized Church took the name of " THE SOUTH CONGRE- GATIONAL CHURCH IN NORTH BRIDGEWATER."
April 12, 1837, Rev. JOHN DWIGHT was ordained
4
the first Pastor of the Church. He was dismissed January 2, 1839. Rev. DANIEL HUNTINGTON Was installed Pastor of the Church, January 1, 1840; and was dismissed, May 11, 1853. Rev. DAVID TEMPLE PACKARD, the next Pastor, was ordained September 21, 1854; and was dismissed, October 1, 1856. Rev. CHARLES W. WOOD, the present Pastor, was installed February 3, 1858.
Rev. DANIEL HUNTINGTON, the second Pastor of this Church, was born in New London, Ct., 1788. He was ordained to the work of the ministry, and installed as Pastor of the First Church of North Bridgewater, October 28, 1812. In consequence of ill health, he was compelled to resign his charge, March 27, 1833. After a temporary respite, he was able to engage in teaching, in New London, Ct. In this employment, with occasional preaching, he passed seven years, when his health had so far returned as to enable him to resume the labors of a Pastor in 1840. After passing thirteen years in this section of his former field, he retired to the home of his youth, where he continued to preach the Gospel, as opportu- nity offered, till near the time of his departure, May 21, 1858, aged seventy years.
He was a man of refined sensibilities and generous sympathies, a Christian of deep experience, a minister of rare talent, fidelity, affectionateness and devotedness to the interests of Zion and to the world's welfare ; " and, but for his unfeigned humility and extreme modesty, and his exclusive respect to the recompense of reward, he had shone with far superior brilliancy in the starry firmament of earth's ambition, though

less splendidly in that nobler firmament where stars never set and the sun no more goes down."
The first House of Worship was built in 1836. It was wholly consumed by fire, together with ten other buildings, in May, 1853. The present House was erected in 1854. It is eighty-four feet in length and fifty-six feet in width, with forty feet posts. There are ninety pews, besides seats in front which are held free. The basement, which is wholly above ground, is finished with three rooms ; a large and small vestry, and a ladies' room. The spire, which was one hun- dred and seventy-five feet high, was blown down in January, 1857. The present spire is one hundred and thirty-five feet high. The cost of the House was $16,000.
SILVANUS FRENCH and JACOB FULLER, were chosen the first Deacons of the Church. April 22, 1845, brothers GALEN PRATT and CARY HOWARD . were elected Deacons.
PROFESSION OF FAITH.
We solemnly profess our unfeigned belief of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, as given by divine inspiration ; our acceptance of all the doctrines contained in them, and our submission to the whole will of God therein revealed. Particularly we profess to believe, that the Lord Jehovah,-the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,-is the one liv- ing and true God ; that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God, essentially equal with the Father, and the

only Saviour of men ; that the Holy Ghost is also God, and that He is the only Sanctifier of those who believe in Christ to the salvation of their souls.
We believe that, in consequence of the fall of man from his primitive state of innocence, all the human race, while unregenerate, are destitute of holiness ; and therefore that a renovation of heart, during the present life, through sanctification of the Spirit of God, is necessary, to fit mankind for union and communion with the visible Church of Christ on earth, and for ad- mittance into the kingdom of heaven.
We believe, that, in order to effect our deliverance from the bondage of corruption, and from the curse of the law, under which we all have fallen by transgres- sion, the Eternal Word, who in the beginning was with God, and was God, was made flesh, and dwelt among men on earth, uniting with his divinity the whole human nature, (yet without sin,) in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ ; that this mysterious and adorable Personage having magnified and honored the divine law by his doctrine and example, at length died on the cross, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God ; and that it is through the efficacy of his propitiatory sacrifice alone, his people obtain the divine favor and blessing.
We believe, that, having thus laid down his life, he took it again, being declared the Son of God with power, by the resurrection from the dead ; and that he is now at the right hand of the Father, a Prince and a Saviour, bestowing repentance and remission of sins, through the agency of the Holy Spirit attending the ministry of his word, on those whom the Father hath
£

given him in the everlasting covenant of redemption, as a seed to serve him.
We believe, that, whosoever will, may come and partake the blessings of this great salvation, as they are freely and sincerely offered in the Gospel; yet that none of our apostate race are, of themselves, disposed to forsake sin and devote themselves to God, in heart and life : so that it rests with him, in the exercise of his sovereign wisdom and goodness, to have mercy on whom he will have mercy ; making his Gospel effec- tual to their conviction and conversion, by the attend- ant energy of his Holy Spirit.
" We believe, that none who are thus made partakers of the heavenly calling, shall be finally deprived of the grace which was given them in Christ Jesus before the world began ; but that they shall all be kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation.
We believe, that the Lord Jesus Christ shall appear again at the last day, to judge the quick and dead ; that he will then receive to mansions of eternal rest, all who have truly believed and obeyed his Gospel; and sentence to everlasting destruction from his presence, and from the glory of his power, all who have died, or shall then be found living, in impenitence and unbelief.
COVENANT.
Humbly hoping, that these truths have come not only to our understanding, but to our hearts, " in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assur-
-

ance; " and that we have been enabled to receive them with that faith which purifies the heart, and works by love, and in the exercise of that repentance which is unto life, we do now solemnly avouch the Lord Jehovah to be our God ; Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to be our Redeemer ; and the Holy Spirit to be our Sanctifier.
Depending on divine grace for spiritual strength and comfort, we take the word of God as our only rule of faith and practice ; avowing it to be our supreme desire, and solemn determination, to seek his glory, and his favor, in obedience to all his holy will. Accordingly, we engage to unite in maintaining, and attending on the ministry of his word and ordinances, as he shall give us ability and opportunity, to be thereby edified in our holy faith. We submit ourselves, indi- vidually, to the brotherly watch and discipline of the community which we hereby form, and mutually en- gage to watch over, to exhort, assist, comfort, and admonish each other in brotherly love, as our relation and circumstances may require.
Do you join yourself to this, as a Church of Christ, and adopt this Covenant as your own ?
[All the members of the Church rise.]
We, then, the members of this Church, receive you cheerfully to our communion ; engaging on our part to love you, pray for you, and watch over you with Chris- tian affection, and entreating you to remember that, from this solemn hour, you have assumed obligations from which you can never escape. Wherever you go, these vows will be upon you. They will follow you
£

to the bar of God ; and in whatever world you may be fixed, will abide upon you to eternity. You can never again be as you have been. You have unalterably committed yourself, and henceforth you must be the servant of God. May the Lord guide and preserve you till death, and at last receive you and us to that blessed world, where our love and joy shall be forever perfect. AMEN.
RECEPTION OF MEMBERS FROM OTHER CHURCHES.
Immediately before the administration of the Lord's Supper, the names of those whose letters have been accepted shall be read, together with the names of the Churches recommending them ; and, rising in their places, they receive the following address :
CHRISTIAN FRIENDS :
In a former connection, you have avowed your belief in the cardinal doctrines of our faith, and sustained a. visible union to the Great Head of the Church. Bearing testimonials of good standing in the Church of Christ which we receive as valid, you are now to. assume similar obligations, and enter into like engage- ments with us. Do you, therefore, accept the Articles. of Faith, and adopt the Covenant of this Church ? (The members assenting.) In behalf of this Church, I do therefore welcome you to its fellowship, and declare you entitled to all its privileges. And may

the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ ; to whom be glory forever and ever. AMEN.
STANDING RULES.
1. An annual meeting of the Church shall be held in the month of January, at such time as shall be determined by the Pastor and Deacons.
2. A meeting for business, prayer and conference, shall be held on some day of the week preceding the first Sabbath in February, April, June, August, October and December.
3. A meeting for prayer and conference shall be held each week, at such time as the Standing Com- mittee shall determine.
4. Special meetings may be called at any time by the Pastor ; and shall be called by the Pastor or Deacons, upon the written request of five members of the Church.
5. At the annual meeting there shall be chosen an Assistant Clerk, who shall assist the Pastor in keeping
·
11
the records of the Church, and who shall discharge all the duties of Clerk in case of the inability of the Pastor, or when the office of Pastor is vacant.
6. At the annual meeting shall be chosen four persons who, with the Pastor and Deacons, shall constitute a Standing Committee, who shall examine candidates for admission to the Church; institute inquiries in regard to public offences and report them to the Church if necessary ; in the absence of the Pastor take charge of religious meetings maintained by the Church, and have an oversight of the welfare of the Church. They shall also have a general super- intendence of the Sabbath School, deciding as to the manner of appointing Superintendent and teachers, and taking such measures from time to time as the interests of the Sabbath School may demand.
7. Persons approved by the Committee shall be presented to the Church for examination, and if the examination be satisfactory, they shall be propounded to the congregation, and not less than one week there- after may be admitted to membership by a vote of the Church, and their public assent to the Confession of Faith and Covenant of this Church.
8. Members of other Evangelical Churches, pre- senting letters of dismission and recommendation, may be admitted to this Church in accordance with the form prescribed for the " Reception of Members from other Churches," after examination and approval by the Standing Committee, the acceptance of their letters
12
by the Church, and the propounding of their names one week at least before such admission.
9. Any member, removing his place of worship, is expected to ask a dismission and recommendation to the Church with which he worships, within one year after his removal ; and, neglecting to do so, may be called to account in such manner as may be deemed expedient.
10. Members of other Evangelical Churches are to be invited to commune with us in Christian ordinances ; but members of Orthodox Congregational Churches, who join us statedly in public worship, are expected to become members with us, within one year. It shall be the duty of the Standing Committee, as far as may be, to become acquainted with such members of other Churches, invite them to become members of this Church, and, in case of a neglect for a long time to do so, call the attention of the Church to which they belong, to the fact, if they think it expedient.
11. In all cases of private offences, the rule as given in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, is to be strictly observed. In case of public offences, the Standing Committee, or such other Committee as the Church may designate for the purpose, shall take the same course. If no satisfaction be given, the matter shall be laid before the Church at some regular meeting. If the Church deem it a duty to pursue the matter- having found all the first steps unavailing-a written complaint, containing a specification of the charges
13
preferred, and signed by the Clerk, shall, by vote of the Church, be placed in the hands of the offender, and he cited or summoned by a vote of the Church, to appear at a given time and place, and make answer to said charges before the Church.
12. The Deacons shall take charge of all money belonging to the Church, and of all collections for charitable objects, and shall make a full report of the same, at the annual meeting.
13. At the annual meeting, reports will be expected from the Superintendent of the Sabbath School, exhib- iting its success during the preceding year ; from the Deacons, of the various contributions and donations to objects of Christian benevolence ; and from the Stand- ing Committee, in reference to the general condition of the Church-the number of deaths-additions and dismissions ; and whatever else may be of interest to the Church.
14. Any of the above rules may be annulled or changed, or new ones may be added, at any regular meeting of the Church, notice having been given at a previous meeting.
