INTRODUCTION

.

The list of vessels entering and clearing from the Port of Salem, as published in the following pages, has been taken from two original Naval Office books which were rescued from a junk dealer several years ago, and pre- sented to the Essex Institute. Naval records of American ports before 1789 have practically disappeared, and our Library was fortunate in securing this data relating even to so short a period as 1750-1769. The prosperous mer- chants of Essex County ports were the owners of nearly all the vessels mentioned. There were such merchants from Salem as the Derbys, Ornes, Gardners, Graftons, Pickmans, Hathornes, Ingersolls, Crowninshields, Wards, Cabots, Goodhues, Hodges and Peeles; from Marblehead, the Hoopers, Lees, Taskers, Gallisons, Staceys, Fowles, Ornes, Glovers and Swetts; from Newburyport, the Traceys, Daltons, Swetts, Atkins, Tappans and Titcombs ; from Beverly, the Thorndikes, Stephens, Batchelders, Bartletts, Davises, Lovetts and Obears. There were many others from all these ports who owned a few shares in fishing or merchant vessels.

The ports of destination in this record give a good idea of the triangular trade" that flourished during the middle of the eighteenth century, which can be followed easily from the entry of each vessel. The trade was for the most part to southern ports in the American colonies, the West Indies, Spain, Portugal and England. Newfound- land, Halifax, Quebec and Louisburg also enjoyed a coast- wise trade with New England. Ports mentioned in Spain, Portugal, France and the Western Islands, include Cadiz, Oporto, Grenada, Bilbao, Lisbon, Marseilles, Madeira, Fayal, Alicante, Malaga, Gibraltar, Ferrol, Corunna, Cag- liare, Vigo, St. Ubes and Figueira. Only twice was Italy mentioned, one of which was a voyage to Leghorn. Eng-

INTRODUCTION

lish ports mentioned were Appledore, Liverpool, Falmouth, Teignmouth, Biddeford, Newcastle, London and Plym- outh. Cork, Ireland, and Montrose, Scotland, were men- tioned once each. One correction should be made in the voyage of the brig Conway in 1767, which through error was copied "to Sumatra." It obviously should read "to Surinam."

Supplementing the list herewith presented, the Essex Institute has recently secured from the Public Record Office in London a series of Naval Office records, 1686- 1765, which includes all the Essex County ports. These are the quarterly returns which were made by naval officers of American ports to the London office, and cover Boston and York County, Maine, as well as Essex County ports. They give information as to masters, owners, car- goes, date and place of building of the vessel, tonnage, registration, etc., and should be consulted by those inter- ested in shipping of this period, as well as for biographical material in connection with shipping merchants.

Photostatic copies of these English records, as com- piled by the Essex Institute, may be found in libraries in various parts of the United States. Our subscribers to these copies are: The Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, Yale University Library, Columbia Uni- versity Library, Library of the University of Illinois, Massachusetts Historical Society, William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan, Library of the Wisconsin State Historical Society, Chicago University Library, Peabody Museum, Salem, and Mr. Charles H. Taylor of Boston.

The illustrations are largely from the collection of shipping manuscripts of the eighteenth century in posses- sion of the Essex Institute, to which are added portraits of merchants of the period and carly pictures of foreign ports.

EARLY COASTWISE AND FOREIGN SHIPPING OF SALEM.

A RECORD OF THE ENTRANCES AND CLEARANCES OF THE PORT OF SALEM, 1750-1769.

The following list of entrances and clearances of the Port of Salem has been prepared from a chronological record in possession of the Essex Institute. It includes not only Salem vessels, but those of Marblehead, Ipswich, Gloucester, Newburyport, Beverly, and doubtless many others which may be identified by names of masters. It will be of especial interest to those whose maritime for- bears sailed from these ports. The material is arranged alphabetically by name of vessel, followed by type of ves- sel, tonnage, name of master, and port of destination or port. from which the vessel entered, with dates. Many whose names appear as masters during this period, be- came later eminent merchants and owners of vessels which brought the riches of the Far East to the shores of Massa- chusetts.
