INTRODUCTION
ACTING upon the request made several years ago by the New Eng- land Historic Genealogical Society of Boston, Miss C. Alice Baker of Cambridge and Deerfield began the work of copying the inscrip- tions on the gravestones of the old burying ground in this town. The town records of New England often lack facts which the grave- yards can supply, and when a stone disappears-as indeed happened between the beginning and ending of this copying-the record is lost.
For this purpose the Genealogical Society is always glad to fur- nish suggestions as to methods, to supply durable paper and to care for manuscript copies in its library.
In this case, the manuscript has been held until the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association found a fitting time to print. Many hands have, from time to time, helped with the copying, but the undersigned, who after Miss Baker's death, assumed the obligation of finishing the work acknowledges especially the help of Miss Lucy Pratt.
