PREFACE.
IN issuing the seventh number of the GLOUCESTER DIRECTORY the publishers wish to direct the attention of the public to a few of the improvements introduced with this volume :
It will be noticed that in the body of the work are given the names of citizens who have died since the last Directory was published, with date of death ; also, the names of many who have removed from the city, with the place to which they have gone. '
A new map of Gloucester and Rockport has been engraved expressly for this publication, from recent surveys and public records.
A Business Directory of Rockport has been added at this time.
The population of each town in the State, according to the new census of 1880 is given (see page 206) ; also the population of Gloucester by wards (see opp. page.)
These and other improvements increase the value of the Directory as a book of reference, and we feel assured that this volume contains a full and fair presentation of the business and other interests of Cape Ann.
The number of names in this volume is 6,340, including 338 deaths and removals. To patrons and others who have aided us in many ways, we tender sincere SAMPSON, DAVENPORT, & CO. thanks.
