INTRODUCTORY NOTE

THE Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, composed of male and female descendants of the Passengers in the " May- flower " on that memorable voyage which terminated at Plymouth, New England, in December, 1620, was organized at Boston on 28 March, 1896, to perpetuate the memory of those Mayflower Pilgrims and to collect and preserve all historical data relating to them. Three years later, in January, 1899, the Society began the publication of an illustrated quarterly magazine, "The Mayflower Descendant," devoted to the genealogy, history and biography of the Pilgrims, their ancestors and their descendants. Seven volumes of this magazine have been completed, comprising more than two thousand octavo pages, a large proportion of the space being given up to the printing of literal copies of records never before published. Among the priceless records which are thus being preserved and put within easy reach of every one who desires to consult them, may be mentioned the Town Records of Births, Marriages and Deaths ; the Probate and Land Records of the old Plymouth Colony and of the Counties of Plymouth, Barnstable and Bristol; Gravestone Records; Church Records of Baptisms, Admissions, Deaths, etc .; Records from Family Bibles, Diaries and other Private Memoranda.

In order to hasten the work of preserving the town records, the Massachusetts Society decided to print in separate volumes, as rap- idly as the necessary funds could be secured, literal copies of the Vital Records of the Towns in Barnstable and Plymouth Counties, and contributions were solicited for the "Cape Cod Town Record Fund " and the "Old Colony Town Record Fund," to be used in printing the records of the towns in these counties. Two volumes in this series have, been issued, the " Vital Records of Brewster, Mass.," and the " Vital Records of Halifax, Mass." Two more vol- umes, the " Vital Records of Eastham, Mass.," and the " Vital Rec- ords of Truro, Mass.," are in press and are being forwarded as rapidly as the contributions to the Cape Cod Town Record Fund will allow.

Of no less importance than the town records of births, marriages and deaths are the inscriptions on the thousands of gravestones in

the cemeteries in Barnstable and Plymouth Counties. Some of these cemeteries have been unused, and totally neglected, for years, and the inscriptions on many of the stones are rapidly disappearing. The preservation of these death records, a large proportion of which cannot be found on the town records, forms an important part of the work of the Massachusetts Society, and it already owns literal copies of 3000 or more inscriptions, dated prior to 1851, from cemeteries in these counties. A few of these gravestone records have been published in "The Mayflower Descendant," but the space which can be given in each volume is necessarily limited.

Mr. Thomas W. Thacher and Mr. Stanley W. Smith of Boston, being desirous of hastening the preservation of the records in the " Ancient Cemetery " on Centre and Winter Streets, Yarmouth Village, and in the " Woodside Cemetery " on Summer Street, Yar- mouthport, both in the town of Yarmouth, Mass., engaged Miss Edna L. Taylor, of Orleans, Mass., to make literal copies of all inscriptions dated prior to 1851, in these two cemeteries, with a few after that date. They also contributed to the Cape Cod Town Record Fund a sum sufficient to enable the Society to publish these records in the form here presented. The inscriptions were copied in September, 1905, and the copies were verified in October and November by Mr. Smith and Mr. Thacher, with the assistance of Mr. Edward H. Whorf, and have been presented to this Society.

Copies of a few inscriptions on stones in private burial places have also been furnished by Mr. Thacher's brother, Mr. George Winslow Thacher of Yarmouthport.

In the following pages the Editor has presented, in as condensed a form as possible, the death records contained in these inscrip- tions, and yet has preserved every genealogical fact. The records in the " Ancient Cemetery " have been arranged alphabetically, fol- lowed by those in the " Woodside Cemetery," similarly arranged, with the records from private grounds at the end.

The progress of the work of preserving and making accessible the Town and Gravestone Records depends entirely upon the liber- ality of those interested, and the order in which the records will be published will be determined by the wishes of those who contribute to the expense. All receipts from sales of copies of the books pub- lished at the charge of either fund will be added to that fund to assist in printing other records.

Contributions for either the Cape Cod Town Record Fund or
