PREFACE.

1128352

AT a meeting of the Council of the Massachusetts Historical Society, May 10, 1883, "Mr. Deane . and Mr. Adams were appointed a Committee to cause to be pre- pared a Consolidated Index of the twenty volumes of the Proceedings."

The Committee accepted the appointment, and placed in the charge of Mr. Charles A. Cutter, the Librarian of the Boston Athenæum, -who is regarded as an expert in cata- loguing and indexing, and who had already performed a similar service for the Society, - the making of the new index. His engagements, however, obliged him to intrust the principal part of the work to Mrs. Alice C. Beckwith, of Cambridge, an accomplished laborer in this field, re- serving for himself only a general oversight.

The intention was to consolidate the indexes of the twenty volumes into one index. But an examination showed -what had been already apparent to many - that the indexes of the earlier volumes were defective ; so it was decided to make new indexes to five volumes, beginning with Vol. III. In the progress of the work it was found that some of the later volumes were not wholly free from errors and omissions, and these also required revision; and the additional labor has not been sinall. The Committee have not been inattentive to the progress of the work, and have rendered what service they could.

iv

PREFACE.

They desire to bear testimony to the faithful and intelli- gent labors of Mrs. Beckwith, who has been unremitting in her work, which, however, was suspended several months by her severe illness. The index has been about two years in preparation, and more than one year in the press. It has cost more time and more money than was expected. Now that the work is finished we cannot but believe that the labor faithfully bestowed upon it has produced what will prove to be a correct and useful / index.

The printing of the Society's Proceedings was not commenced until a comparatively late period of its his- tory. The first volume printed was issued in 1859, under a vote of the Society, in April of the preceding year, au- thorizing the Standing Committee "to publish such a selection from the recent proceedings of the Society as they deemed to be of general interest." The Chairman and Secretary were appointed a committee to carry this vote into effect. They began with the Annual Meeting of 1855, and concluded with the proceedings of the year 1857-1858. This period embraced several matters of spe- cial interest to the Society, containing an account of the donations of the Appleton and the Sears Fund, of the Dowse Library and Fund, of the Belknap collection of books and manuscripts, of the recovery of the Bradford Manuscript, of the purchase of the building occupied by the Society, etc .; and the meeting with which it com- menced was that at which the Hon. Robert C. Winthrop was first elected President of the Society.

This volume was not numbered Vol. I., because it was - hoped that there would be prepared, at some not very remote time, a digest or selection from the Society's earli- est records, and that such a volume or volumes when pub- lished would take precedence in the order of numbering ; so that the volumes of Proceedings, which now continued

to be issued, contained on their titlepages and on their backs simply the years embraced by their contents. Four- teen volumes were thus issued down to and including the calendar year 1878. The next volume in the chrono- logical series, beginning with January, 1879, was called Vol. XVII. on the titlepage and on the back, because in the mean time two volumes of the early Proceedings had been prepared and published, and they became Volumes I. and II. in the series, and the unnumbered volumes were counted in regular order as following these. Any reprints that may hereafter be made of these volumes will doubtless conform to this numbering.

Volumes I. and II. and Volumes XI. to XX. are stereo- typed. Following is a list of the twenty volumes of Pro- ceedings here indexed, with the date of their publication and the names of the members composing the Committees of Publication. The Recording Secretary is ex officio Chair- man of the Committee for publishing the Proceedings.
