INSCRIPTIONS

FROM THE

OLD CEMETERY

IN

ROWLEY, MASS.

COPIED HY GEO. B. BLODGETTE, M.A.

SALEM, MASS. : JIE SALEM PRESS PUBLISHING AND PRINTING CO. 1893.

REPORT OF THE CEMETERY COMMISSIONERS.

Since our last report the negotiations, then begun with Mr. John Lambert for a way in the cemetery on the west of the additions of 1830 and 1855, have been completed.

In consideration of fifty dollars, land one rod in width and nearly twenty-two rods in length has been conveyed to the town by Mr. Lambert, as an addition to the ceme- tery, upon condition of no burials thereon, and its use as a way, and for trees. 1944785

This land has been enclosed, the way laid out and gravelled. The purchase money came to ns by donation as shown hereafter.

The survey by Mr. J. W. Nourse as ordered by the town is finished and the plan made.

The old gravestones in that part of the cemetery in use before 1830, have been reset. They are decaying and the inscriptions thereon becoming illegible.

For this reason we have caused all the inscriptions in this part of the ground to be carefully copied, without expense to the town, and herewith submit the list as an appendix to this report.

For convenience we have named the several ways in the cemetery as follows :

The avenue extending south from Main street, Central avenue. The new way from Central avenue west to the addition of 1892 and thence south on said addition, Lam- bert avenue.

The way next sonth of Phillips avenne, Shepard avenue.

The way next south of Shepard avenue, Payson aWelle.

The way next south of Payson avenne, Jewett avenue.

The way next south of Jewett avenue, Bradford

These names are selected in memory of Ezekiel Rogers, Sammanel Phillips, Samuel Shepard, Edward Payson, Jedidiah Jewett and Ebenezer Bradford the first six min- isters of the gospel settled over the First Church in Rowley.

The way next west of Central avenue is named Miller avenue.

The way next west of Miller avenne is named Trumble avenue.

The way next cast of Central avenue is named Parrat avenue.

The way next cast of Parrat avenne is named Leaver avenne.

These names are selected in memory of John Miller, Francis Parrat, John Trumble and Thomas Leaver the first four town clerks of Rowley.

The cemetery in Rowley in the Linebrook Parish has not yet been visited by your commissioners and a report thereon must be deferred until another year.

Of the many letters received evincing the interest of the writers in our cemetery and the improvements made therein it seems appropriate that one at least should ap- pear in this report :-

MY DEAR SIR :

In answer to your letter, let me say that, until further notice from me to you or your successors, I shall be glad to hear the expense of cleaning and repairing the monument and burial lot of my ancestor the Rev. Samuel Phillips, second minister of Rowley.

I shall be glad if you can let me know about what the annual expense is likely to be.

Yours sincerely, PHILIPS BROOKS.

Geo. B. Blodgette, Esq.

Respectfully submitted,

INSCRIPTIONS FROM THE OLD CEME- TERY IN ROWLEY, MASS.

COPIED BY GEO. B. BLODGETTE, M.A.

APPENDIX.

The following list includes all the inscriptions now (1892) to be found in that part of the cemetery in use before 1830.

Two gravestones were last year moved to the addition of 1850.

This cemetery was the only one used by the town of Rowley to 1702, when the burial ground in Byfield Parish was first used.

The first burial in the Second Parish of Rowley, now George- town, was in 1732. There is a cemetery in Rowley, within the limits of the Linebrook Parish, used as early as 1747 ; it is now without inscriptions, is wholly abandoned, and its site known to but few.

The words and figures in brackets above each inscription in- dicate where the same may be found in the rows of stones on the east and west side of Central Avenue, entering from Main street.

Thus [6 Row West 3] indicates the sixth row from the gate on the west side of Central Avenue and the third stone from the Avenue in that row.
