FALMOUTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OLD BURYING GROUND.

The following are the records on all the stones in the Old Burying Ground in Falmouth which were standing in the year 1903. The history of this old burying ground is lost in obscurity and in the limited time at my disposal, I have been unable to diseover any ac- count in the early records of the town of its laying out. It is hoped by the time these records have been completed. to give its history so far as tradition and A more careful search through the records here and at Barnstable may make possi- ble.

The purpose in view in publishing these old records is to obtain added in- formation respeeting those who have been buried in the ground but whose graves are unmarked. It is therefore earnestly requested that anyone having information of any burials, the record of which does not appear in these printed lists. will communicate such informa- tion to me, and thus help to complete the record and preserve the memory of those whose last resting place is unre- corded.

The gathering and preparation of these inscriptions have involved much and careful work. The town as well as myself in this connection, is greatly in- debted to Mr. Seba A. Holton for valued services most freely given and at the expenditure of no little time. Special mention should also be made of Miss Anna W. Gardner and Mrs. John H. Quint, who have done the entire work of drawing off and arranging the in- scriptions in full.

The epitaphs, however, do not, except in a few instances, appear in the printed record. The numbers prefixed to the in- sciptions refer to a chart on which the locations of the graves, so far as could be identiffed, have been entered. The perpendicular lines indicate the division of the lines on the stones.

So far as known, this record as it appears is the only one in existence.

HENRY HERBERT SMYTHE.

EAST END BURYING GROUND.

The following are the records on all the stones in the Old Burying Ground adjoining the East Falmouth Congrega- tional church, commonly known as the "East End meeting house," which were standing in 1904.

The purpose in view in publishing these old records is to obtain added in- formation respecting those who have been buried in the ground but whose graves are unmarked. It is therefore earnestly requested that those having in- formation of any burials, the record of which does not appear in these printed lists, will communicate such information to me, and thus help to complete the record and preserve the memory of those whose last resting place is unrecorded.

The gathering and preparation of these inscriptions have involved much and careful work. The town as well as my- self in this connection, is greatly indebt- ed to Mr. S. A. Holton and Rev. John II. Quint, who assisted in the work of gath- ering the records.

The epitaphs do not appear in the printed record. The numbers prefixed to the inscriptions refer to a chart on which the locations of the graves, so far as could be identified, have been entered. The perpendicular lines indicate the division of the lines on the stones.

So far as known, this record as it appears is the only one in existence.

HENRY HERBERT SMYTHE.

The above inscriptions include all those upon stones which were standing in October, 1904.

The names of a few persons whose bodies are buried here, and whose graves . are not marked, have been printed with the others. The names of a few more are known and it is proposed to add to this list as many as may be had. It is earnestly urged upon those having friends buried in this ground whose names do not appear in the printed list, to send such names with date of death and age, if known, to HENRY HERBERT SMYTHE, Falmouth, Mass., to be inserted - in this proposed supplementary list.
