PREFACE.
Fifty-four years ago, in the year 1832, the first number of the Lowell Tra - tory appeared, containing 90 small pages and about 1200 names. In his nt )- duction, the compiler, Mr. Benjamin Floyd, says "Much pains has been tak- n to obtain all desirable information, but in many instances it has been ao.d very difficult to designate by streets and numbers the residences of all the - habitants, in the present unfinished and unsettled state of the place." Te inconveniences continued for many years, and the street numbering was why incomplete up to 1851, when Mr. George Adams, the founder of the firm f Adams, Sampson, & Co. now SAMPSON, MURDOCK, & Co. undertook the puldi- cation of the Directory. Since that time Lowell has grown rapidly in populatn and business, and the Directory is now a portly volume of 852 pages, requiri g many weeks of laborious and careful work for its preparation.
Special care has been taken this year to make the canvass more complete than ever, the result being a large increase in names, as will be seen by ref r- ence to the table of changes below.
The various departments of the book are believed to be complete and accurate, and fully represented in the Index to Contents on the opposite para, to which attention is directed. The Advertisements are worthy of careful notice, representing as they do very largely the business interests of the city. To ( 'ır patrons, and also the many friends who have cheerfully furnished informaty 1 concerning Societies, Churches, and Institutions, the thanks of the publisher are tendered.
