FORM OF ADMISSION

-

ADDRESS

Beloved Friends,-

You have presented yourselves before God and his people, and the world, to make solemn profession of your religious faith, and to take upon you the bonds of the everlasting Covenant. We trust you have well considered the nature of this transaction,-the most solemn and momentous in which a mortal can ever engage,-and that you are prepared, by divine grace, to give yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

You will now attend to the

CONFESSION OF FAITH

I. We believe in one only living and true God- the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; and that it is the duty of all intelligent creatures to love and obey him.

2. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God; that it was given by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost; and is the sufficient and only rule of faith and practice.

3. We believe that God created man upright; we believe the fall of man, the depravity of human nature, and that men, unless they are born again, can never see the Kingdom of God.

1. 0

4

FORM OF ADMISSION

4. We believe in the incarnation, obedience, suf- fering, and death of Christ; his resurrection and ascension; that he alone, by his suffering and death, hath made atonement for sin; and that he ever liv- eth to make intercession for us.

5. We believe that Christ hath appointed two special ordinances - Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

6. We believe in the future existence of the soul; that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked -a day of final judgment; that all will receive according to their works; that the wicked will go away into everlasting punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.

Thus you profess to believe.

(Those who have not been baptized, here receive the ordinance of Baptism.)

You will now enter into solemn Covenant with God and with the Church.

COVENANT

You now, humbly and penitently asking the for- giveness of all your sins, through the blood of the great Redeemer, give up yourselves to God, in an everlasting Covenant, in our Lord Jesus Christ; and as in the presence of God, angels, and men, you sol- emnly promise that by the assistance of the Holy Spirit you will forsake the vanities of this present evil world, and approve yourselves true disciples of

5

FORM OF ADMISSION

Jesus Christ, in all good carriage toward God and toward man.

And you likewise promise, so long as God shall continue you among us to walk in communion with the Church of Christ in this place; to watch over other professing Christians among us; to submit to the power and discipline of Christ in his Church, and duly to attend the seals and the censures or whatever ordinance Christ has commanded to be observed by his people, so far as the Lord by his Word and Spirit has revealed or shall reveal to you to be your duty; adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things, and avoiding the appear- ance of evil; and by daily prayer to Almighty God, in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, you will seek for grace to keep this Covenant.

Thus you covenant and promise.

We, therefore, the members of this Church (all the members of the Church here rise), affectionately receive you to our communion and fellowship; and on our part, engage to watch over your spiritual in- terests and walk with you in all the ordinances of the gospel as becometh saints. And may God in his infinite mercy give us grace to be faithful to him, and faithful to each other, while we live; that we may be admitted at last, through the merits of Christ, to the everlasting fellowship of saints and angels, in the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

I. This, the South Church in Andover, is Con- gregational in polity; and its understanding of Chris- tian truth is in substantial accord with the doctrines commonly held by the Congregational churches of our country.

2. Persons desiring membership with

us, whether by confession of faith or by letter from a sister Church, are referred to the prudential com- mittee. After approval and recommendation by this committee, they shall be propounded at the public service of the Church on the Sabbath next preceding their expected reception. The Church shall vote on their admission at the preparatory lecture, and they shall become members at the regular com- munion season, on receiving baptism if not before baptized, and on assent to our Confession of Faith and our Covenant.

3. Any member of this Church seeking member- ship elsewhere is expected to ask a letter of dismis- sion and recommendation; and such letter may be given to a member in good standing, by vote of the Church, at any general Church service, without pre- vious notice.

4. The officers of the Church shall be a pastor, six deacons, four deaconesses, four specially elected members of the prudential committee, a clerk, a

5. The election of officers shall take place at the annual meeting of the Church, and their terms of office shall be as follows :-

The Deacons shall be elected in rotation,-one shall be chosen each year; his term of office shall be six years; after the expiration of which he shall not be again eligible to the office within one year. In similar manner the special members of the pruden- tial committee shall be elected in rotation, one each year; his term of office shall be four years, and he shall afterwards be ineligible for one year. The deaconesses shall be elected in the same manner as the special members of the prudential committee. The terms of service of the other elected officers shall be one year.

6. Vacancies in any office may be filled for the remainder of the official term at any business meet- ing called for the purpose.

7. The pastor, the deacons, the four members specially elected thereto, and the superintendent of the Sunday School shall together constitute the Prudential Committee of the Church.

This Committee shall have the general oversight of the interests of the Church, and shall from time to time make such recommendations to the Church as shall seem to them expedient. They shall meet

as often as once in two months, and whenever re- quested so to do by the pastor.

They shall recommend for membership such ap- plicants as, after due examination and inquiry, they may approve.

They shall investigate any real or alleged public offense by members, and recommend to the Church such action as they may deem necesary. They may also, if requested, investigate private offenses, after steps appointed by our Saviour in Matt. xviii, 15-17 have been taken by the individuals concerned, and recommend proper action.

They shall report at each annual meeting the con- dition of the Church, and all events worthy of Church record which have occurred within the year.

8. The pastor, superintendent, and assistant superintendents shall be the Executive Committee of the Sunday School. This Committee shall have the general care and oversight of the School, shall appoint teachers and other officers as may be re- quired, and shall make report at the annual business meeting.

9. The Clerk shall keep a record of the business transacted at any meeting of the Church; shall notify all persons of their appointments to any office or duty; shall sign all letters of dismission; and shall record in the register of the Church the names of all members, with the date and manner of their admis- sion or removal.

He shall also receive all contributions for benevo- lent purposes, and transmit them to the authorized treasurers or agents.

He shall render to the Church at the annual meet- ing a full and detailed account of all receipts and disbursements.

II. Our religious meetings,-as for public wor- ship on the Sabbath, for prayer and praise, for Sunday School instruction, for the Lord's Supper, for the Preparatory Lecture-shall be at such times and place as the Church may appoint, but the Lord's Supper shall regularly be administered at the morn- ing service on the first Sabbath in January, March, May, July, September, and November.

12. The Church, whenever they come to the table of the Lord, cordially invite those who are in regu- lar standing as members of other Churches, of what- ever name or denomination, to unite with us in cele- brating his love.

No- tice of these meetings shall be given from the pulpit on the Sabbath next preceding the day of meeting.

15. All members of the Church in good standing, over eighteen years of age, are entitled to vote in all matters of Church business.

16. The absence of any member from our com- munion for more than one year shall be matter for investigation by the prudential committee; and this committee shall take such further action and make to the Church such recommendations as they may see fit.

17. Delegates to ecclesiastical councils or to other gatherings may be appointed by vote of the Church at any church service, without previous no- tice. The expenses of delegates to ecclesiastical councils shall be paid by the treasurer from the funds of the Church.
