HISTORICAL SKETCH.
HE First Evangelical Church in Clinton was organized November 14, 1844. Fifty -one persons constituted the original membership. Of this number twenty-six had previously been con- nected with the Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster, of which town the village of Clintonville was then a part. Public worship was held for nearly two years in a chapel, situated on Main, near the foot of Water Street. To meet the wants of the increasing congregation, the present edifice on Walnut Street was raised and dedicated in the month of January, 1847, which was remodelled and enlarged in the fall of 1858, and rededicated February 22, 1859. Since its forma- tion, the growth of the church has been for the most part constant ; few Communion seasons have passed without some additions. Special religious interest marked the years of 1861, 1867, 1870. Its history seems to have proved it a " branch of the Lord's plant- ing : the work of his hands," destined, as we may hope, to render Him still greater glory.

ECCLESIASTICAL PRINCIPLES.
CHRISTIAN church is a voluntary associa- tion of professed believers in Christ, formed on the basis of the Holy Scriptures, united by solemn covenant for the worship of God, for the ob- servance of Christian ordinances, for mutual aid and encouragement in all Christian duties, and for the spread of the gospel.
Each local church is complete in itself, recognizing no external authority, but obedient only to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church Universal, under whose law alone it has a right to manage its own affairs.
Churches thus independent are yet connected by mutual duties, and cooperate as integral parts of the one Catholic Church.
The fellowship of Congregational churches is man- ifested in conferences for devotion and mutual en- couragement, and in councils, convened for advice and assistance ; but councils have no judicial or ecclesiasti- cal power.
In common with other branches of the Christian Church, we believe that the Ministry is ordained of Christ, but not that the power and authority of the Church reside in the ministry, or flow through it, but that they belong to the Church itself.
6
ECCLESIASTICAL PRINCIPLES.
Congregationalists regard as true churches of Christ, all associations of believers, who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity and truth, and who receive Him as their Divine Redeemer, Priest, and King: to all such they warmly extend the hand of Christian fellowship.
D
OFFICERS OF THE CHURCH.
PERMANENT OFFICERS.
I. A Pastor, who shall be moderator of all meet- ings of the church unless objection is made, in which case the Senior Deacon shall perform that duty.
II. Deacons, who shall preside at the meetings of the church in the absence of the Pastor ; prepare for and assist in the celebration of the Lord's Supper ; at- tend to the necessities of the poor of the church ; pro- vide a supply for the pulpit in the temporary absence of the Pastor, and give aid in the ministry of the church as may be needed.
TEMPORARY OFFICERS, chosen by ballot at the Annual Meeting.
I. A Clerk, who shall keep a full record of all action of the church ; all motions with the vote thereon ; the appointment and reports of Committees, which shall be in writing. He shall also keep a book in which the names of all persons on becoming members of the church shall be recorded, with the time of admission and removal, whether by dismission or death ; in addi- tion, he shall present at the annual meeting a list of those members who have been absent more than one year.
II. A Treasurer, who shall receive all moneys raised by the church for whatever purposes, and shall pay the

same to such societies and benevolent objects as the church from time to time may vote, and also for the expenses of the Communion Table. He shall also annually make a detailed report of the receipts and disbursements.
III. A Standing Committee, consisting of the Pastor, Deacons, and Clerk, and three persons chosen annually, whose duty it shall be to examine applicants for admis- sion to the church ; to act as Committee of Inquiry in cases of discipline ; decide what objects shall be pre- sented to the church for contributions, and have a gen- eral supervision over the interests of the church.
Vacancies in any of the offices above named occur- ring during the year, may be filled at any regular meet- ing of the church.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The Annual Meeting of the church shall be held on the second Monday in the month of January. Special meetings shall be called by the Pastor or the Standing Committee when they deem best, or whenever a request in writing is presented by six members of the church.
DISCIPLINE AND RULES OF THE CHURCH.
ISCIPLINE is the exercise of that authority, and the application of that system of laws which the Lord Jesus has appointed in his Church.
The occasions of Church Discipline are either public, as wrong done to the church by neglect of its worship and ordinances, by disregard of its principles, rules, faith, or covenants, or by immoral conduct ; or private, as wrong done to an individual.
All cases of discipline whether for private grievance or public offense shall be prosecuted according to the directions given by the Lord Jesus Christ, as recorded in Matt. xviii. 15-17. No complaint shall be enter- tained by the church unless made in accordance with such instructions.
All complaints shall be made in writing and in the first instance to the Standing Committee, who shall upon sufficient cause present the same to the church ; the complainant may after ten days present the same directly to the church. When a member is accused he shall be seasonably furnished with a copy of the charges against him, and shall have a full hearing, and the trial shall be had without unnecessary delay.
The censures inflicted on offenders shall be private reproof, public admonition, suspension or excommuni-

cation, as the church shall determine. All cases of ex- communication shall be announced from the pulpit on the Sabbath. An excommunicated person may not be restored except on reformation of his conduct, public confession of his sin, and profession of repentance. Admonition shall be administered by the Pastor, or if there be none, by the moderator of the church, in con- formity with its vote.
In the decision of all matters that may come before the church the vote of the Pastor and each male mem- ber are in point of power equal.
Candidates for admission to the church by letter or profession shall be examined by the Standing Com- mittee respecting the ground of their religious hope and belief ; provided that any members of the church may attend these examinations, and make such in- quiries and give such information as they may judge proper.
Members of other churches in fellowship with this, who regularly unite with us in worship and ordinances, are desired to transfer their membership to us without needless delay.
Members of this church who leave town for one year or more shall take letters of dismission and recommen- dation to some sister church, unless satisfactory reasons be given for a longer delay.
Previous to the stated administration of the Lord's Supper a general invitation shall be given to members of churches in fellowship with this, to commune with the same in the Holy Ordinance.
The seasons of communion to be observed by this church shall be six annually : on the first Sabbath in January, March, May, July, September, and November ; previous to each a preparatory lecture shall be given ;

at the close of which, there shall be a stated Church Meeting for the transaction of any business that may come before the church.
All males over twenty-one years of age who have be- come members of the church, are also expected to be- come members of the parish, and all minors uniting with the church, are expected to connect themselves with the parish, when they shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years.
Any of the above articles may be altered or amended by a vote of the majority of the church present at any regular meeting.

FORM OF ADMISSION TO THE CHURCH.
[After prayer the Minister shall read the names of those persons about to unite with the Church on profession of their faith in Christ, who shall present them- selves before him and the Church, and listen to the articles of faith and assent to the covenant read by him.]
CONFESSION OF FAITH.
I. WE believe there is but one living and true God, who is the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of the uni- verse, and who possesses every natural and moral per- fection. Deut. 4 : 35. Isa. 44 : 6. Gen. I : I. Neh. 9 : 6. Ps. 22 : 28. Gen. 17: I. Ps. 90 : 2. Mal. 3 : 6. I Jn. 4: 14.
II. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are given by inspiration of God, and are a perfect rule of faith and practice. Jn. 16 : 13, 14. 2 Pet. I : 21. 2 Tim. 3 : 16. Luke 16 : 29, 31. 2 Pet. 1 : 19.
III. We believe that God exists in three persons : the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost ; that these three are one God, and equal in every divine perfection. Gal. I: 3. Jn. 1: 1-3, 14. Heb. I : 8. Acts 5 : 3 4. Matt. 18 : 20. Acts 7 : 59, 60. 1 Tim. 3 : 16. Jn. IO : 15. I Cor. 2 : 10, II. Heb. 9 : 14. Ps. 139 : 7. Matt. 28: 19. 2 Cor. 13 : 14.
IV. We believe that all mankind are by nature des- titute of holiness, and inclined to evil ; and previous

to regeneration are under sentence of condemnation. Rom. 5 : 12. Gen. 6: 5, II. Isa. 53 : 6. Jer. 17 : 9. Jn. 3 : 6, 7. . Rom. 3: 9-19. 2 Co. 5: 14. Jn. 3 : 18. Gal. 3 : 10.
V. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ possesses a human as well as divine nature ; that He has made an adequate atonement for the sins of men, and that all who are saved will be indebted entirely to the sov- ereign grace of God bestowed on the penitent in conse- quence of Christ's atonement. I Tim. 2: 5. Jn. 1 : 14. 3 : 16. Heb. 2 : 9. I Jn. 2 : 2. 2 Tim. I : 9, 10. Tit. 3 : 4. 7. Eph. 2 : 4, 13. Rom. 3 : 21, 27.
VI. We believe that the offer of salvation is made to all who hear the gospel, but that the human heart is so averse to holiness that no man will come to Christ, ex- cept God by the special influence of his Spirit draw him. Rev. 22 : 17. Isa. 55 : 1, 3, 6, 7. Matt. 21 : 28, 30. Jn. 3 : 14, 15. 7: 37. 5 : 40. Eph. 2 : 8. Tit. 3 : 3,7. Jn. I : 9, 13. 3: 18, 20.
VII. We believe that those who are saved were chosen in Christ, before the foundation of the world, that they should be hol; and without blame before him in love, and that they are saved not by the works of righteousness which they have done but through the sovereign mercy of God by faith in Jesus Christ, being regenerated by the Holy Ghost. Eph. I : 1-14. 2 : 10. 2 Thes. 2 : 13. 2 Tim. I : 9, 10. I Pet. I : 2-5. Tit. 3: 5.
VIII. We believe that all mankind will stand before the judgment-seat of Christ to receive a just and final sentence of retribution according to the deeds done in the body ; and that the happiness of the righteous and the misery of the wicked will be alike eternal. Eccl. 12 : 14. Acts 17: 31. 2 Cor. 5: 10. Matt. 12: 36

CONFESSION OF FAITH.
37. Rev. 20: 11-15. Matt. 25 : 31-46. Dan. 12 : 2, 3. 2 Thes. I : 7-9. Rev. 14: 9-II. 21 : 8. Matt. 3 : 12. 18: 8. Mark 9 : 43-48.
IX. We believe that God has established a Church in the world, and that none should be admitted to its Ordinances except such as give evidence of repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Eph. I : 22. Acts 20: 28. 2 : 41-47. II : 26. 14: 22, 23. I Cor. I : 2. 2 Cor. 6: 14-18.
X. We believe that the Sacraments of the New Testament are Baptism and the Lord's Supper ; that none but members of the visible church have a right to partake of the Holy Supper, and that believers only and their households can be admitted to the Ordinance of Baptism. Matt. 28: 19. Mark 16: 16. Acts Io : 47, 48. 2 : 38, 41. I Cor. II : 23-26, 28. Matt. 26 : 26-28. Acts 8 : 36, 37. Gen. 17 : 7-14. Gal. 3 : 6- 9, 14, 29. Rom. 4 : 11, 12. II : II-24. Acts 2 : 38, 39.
XI. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord's day, and is to be kept sacred to religious pur- poses, by abstaining from recreation, labor, and travel- ing, except under circumstances of necessity and mercy ; by the devout observance of the means of grace, both private and public, and by preparation for that rest which remaineth for the people of God. Ex. 20: 8-II. Jn. 20: 19, 26. Acts 20 : 7. I Cor. 16 : 2. Rev. I : 10.
[If any Candidate is to be baptized the rite will now be administered. The Minister shall then say :]
Attend now to the Covenants into which you are to enter with God and with this church.
15
COVENANT.
COVENANT.
You do now in the presence of God, angels, and men avow the Lord Jehovah, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost to be your God, the Supreme object of your af- fections, and the chosen portion of your soul forever.
You sincerely acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ as your only Saviour and final Judge ; you choose the Holy Spirit as your sanctifier, comforter, and guide.
You humbly and cheerfully consecrate your whole self, soul and body to God ; you unreservedly cove- nant and promise, through the help of Divine Grace, that you will conscientiously attend the public worship of God, give diligent heed to his Word and Ordi- nances, yield your heart to the influences of his Spirit, and that henceforth denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, you will live soberly, righteously, and godly even unto death.
1820257
You cordially join yourself to this as a true Church of Christ, promising obedience to its rules and disci- pline, so far as they conform to the principles of the gospel, and solemnly covenant to strive as much as in . you lies to promote its peace and purity, its edification and prosperity, and to walk with its members in Chris- tian love, watchfulness, faithfulness, meekness and so- briety.
Do you thus covenant and promise ?
[The Candidates having signified their assent, the members of the church will rise and covenant as follows : ]
We then, the members of this church, admit you into our Holy Fellowship in full communion, affectionately welcoming you in the name of Christ, to a part with us in the blessings of his covenant, to a share in the duties, privileges, and glories of his Church, and to

the society of that great multitude which no man can number, who having confessed Him on earth, follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.
We likewise promise in the strength of Divine Grace to love, watch, and help you, as becomes your Christian brethren.
[The minister, taking each of the Candidates by the hand, shall say: In token of our confidence and sympathy receive the hand of Fellowship, and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said, (repeating some appropriate passage)].
Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. AMEN.
