Names of Residents,
INTRODUCTORY.
We present to the citizens of NORTH ADAMS the second Directory of the village, which we have made up after a full canvass of all the residences, and a careful compilation of miscellaneous matter ; and trust it will meet with that gener- ous favor which was accorded to our first issue of 1872.
The changes in residences have been very many ; showing the importance of the present issue, in order to give an accu- rate idea of location. Many new business firms have been established, and several old ones are defunct. So that the present volume, in comparison with our first issue, will show that North Adams is becoming essentially " citified." in this matter, and demands almost yearly a new Directory, for the convenience of all classes.
We are pleased to notice a steady and healthy growth in all branches of manufacturing and mercantile interests -- point- ing to the time, not far distant, when this " Pocket among the Mountains " shall become metropolitan in its character, and be clothed with all the honors and distinctions of a young and thriving City.
Men of wealth and enterprise are investing their capital for the development of its growth, and there is no reason why NORTH ADAMS should not outrank many towns of greater pre- tensions.
Now that the great "Bore" is an acknowledged fact, and the enterprise of the Shanlys' has consummated what was con- sidered an absurdity only a few years since, still another grand opening is afforded and an opportunity presented, for additional sources of prosperity to this thriving village.

DIRECTORY OF NORTH ADAMS.
We cannot close without expressing our thanks to the mer- chants and others for their liberal patronage of the present Directory and their words of commendation for our first issue. We shall on the present occasion, as in our future editions, give the Directory a gratuitous circulation in neighboring towns and hang it in public places, where every advertiser will derive a decided advantage and reap a good reward for every dollar invested.
To James C. Angell, Esq., editor and publisher of the Hoo- sac Valley News, we are especially indebted for courtesies ex- tended to us, and favors shown through the columns of his valuable journal. We are glad to find the "News " meeting with that degree of prosperity which it so richly deserves. May its subscribers roll up among the thousands and its pub- lisher continue to receive the commendations of an apprecia- ting public.
To Messrs. James T. Robinson & Son, the editors of the Transcript, who cheered us on our arduous work, and spoke good words for us in the columns of their paper, we extend our grateful thanks; and if good sound articles and a courte- ous editorial corps are elements of Newspaper success, then the success of the Transcript is assured beyond a doubt.
We would suggest the propriety of a thorough system of street numbering which would not only be a great convenience to the citizens, but also enable us, in future issues, to give more definiteness to the location of residences.
Respectfully,
J. RIDLEY.
