REMARKS.

The second year of the organization of the Town of Norwood is drawing to a close, and in accordance with the By-Laws, we present to the inhabitants the Annual Report.

For Schools there was appropriated $7500, of which $7229.11 has been expended, as per statement, leaving in the Treasury a balance of $270.89.

The Fire Department has been called upon for very little active service, no large fires having occurred in the town. The appropria- tion for this department was $500, the expenditures $662.04, being 162.04 over the appropriation. $500 is too small an amount, even under favorable circumstances, to support this department.

The general condition of Highways is good. The appropriation, (including that for the completion of Chapel, High, Fulton, and Gay streets, with an unexpended balance on Lovis street, and the land damage of Gay street) amounts to $4412.60. The expenditures, including $574.05 for removing snow, (for which no appropriation was made) amount to 4986.65; showing a balance against this de- partment of $501.51.

The vote of the town as to guide-boards has been carried into effect.

There has been expended, for support of Poor, $596.27, and there is still an unsettled account of the past two years, with the Town of Dedham, probably amounting to $400.

We hope the foregoing report will give all a satisfactory idea of the financial condition of the town.

Agreeably to the By-Laws of the town, requiring the Selectmen to make estimates, in detail, of the amount of money required for the current year, we recommend the following appropriations :

The School Committee recommend the same amount for schools as last year.
