REMARKS.

1

The foregoing accounts show that the payments in some departments have exceeded the appropriations. The excess on highways was for repairing bridges, draining Washington Street near the Balch School House, building new culverts and repair- ing old ones damaged by the freshet last season ; for the sup- port of the poor, it is accounted for in part, by reason of the large number of tramps furnished with food and lodgings, and the amount paid the Town of Dedham for the support of pau- pers, since Oct. 1, 1874, having military settlements. The cost ($266 31) of such support previous to the date named, was al- lowed in the settlement with said town, and did not appear in the annual reports.

Three reservoirs have been constructed, two of which have been paid for in full. The contract for the masonry for the one at the junction of Washington and Walpole Streets, was a- warded to William R. Tibbetts for the sum of $334 50, to be paid when it is finished, to the acceptance of the Selectmen. It not having been so finished, no money has been paid on the contract.

Previous to the last financial year, the Treasurer paid the interest on money borrowed in anticipation of taxes, without an order from the Selectmen ; during the past year orders have been drawn for that purpose, the amount of which appears un- der the head of miscellaneous expenditures.

The resources of the Town applicable to the payment of expenses the current year, are
