REMARKS.
The Selectmeu herewith present their anunal report, of the ex- penditures of the town, pursuant to the requirements of the By-Laws, for which orders have been drawn on the Town Treasurer, for the year ending January 31st, 1887.
We have endeavored to keep the payments within the appropri- ations, and have done so with a few exceptions. Ou the highways there are several bills unpaid for work done by Jolinson and Nugent in cleaning up the trenches over the water pipes, which were in bad shape. This work we were expecting would be done by the Water Commissioners, but their money failed them, and if it was not done the town was liable for damage, so we ordered it done, but did not pay for it from the highway money, for we needed it all, and more if we had it, for the streets are in a worse condition than they were ten years ago under the old surveyor system. Therefore, we have asked for five hundred dollars more the present year, which will be a small allowance.
29
Mr. Atwood has one month's salary remaining unpaid. This, together with Johnson and Nugent's bills, will be laid before the voters at the annual town meeting, and can be paid from money re- maining in the treasury.
We hope citizens will be better pleased with our doings this year than last. We certainly are in thinking that we have done the best we could with the money entrusted to us. You will see by the Treasurer's report. financially, we are in better condition than last year.
We congratulate the town on having a solid watering trough- called by some, " solid folly"-but we call it solid comfort for man and beast.
The amount in the hands of the Treasurer, which. if our debts were paid, would be reduced to abont $2,500, comes from the fol- lowing sources :
