ORIGINAL PROPRIETORS or GRANTEES
The General Court of the Province of Massachusetts Bay ruled that the Town of Boston, within five years from the confirmation of the platts in Western Massachusetts, should settle sixty families of His Majesty's subjects, inhabitants of the Province, each of said families to build and finish a dwelling-house upon his house-lot 18 ft.sq. and 7 ft.stud at least; that each of the said settlers within the sta ted term improve 5 A. of the said home lot either for plowing or mowing by planting same with English grass and actually live upon the spot. Also that they build a suitable house for worship of God and settle an orthodox minister in each town and provide for their honorable support and also lay out three house lots in each of the towns, each of which to draw a sixty-third part of said town in all future divisions, one for the first settled minister, one for the second settled minister and one for the school.
The sixty families were to form a Propriety. They were instructed to keep a Proprietors Book in which was a list of names of the original proprietors and a record of the bounds of their lands.
The following lists of original proprietors or grantees were copied from the earliest Proprietors Books of the towns of Berkshire County.
