Toll Service Information
Toll calis are of two general classes. On either, faster service can be rendered if you give the operator the telephone number you are calling. If you can not find the number, ask "Information."
Station-to-Station Calls
Such calls are for "anyone" and permit a minimum of operating la- bor and of equipment use.
For fast service at low rates place the call by number with your own operator; saying, for example, "Providence, Dexter 1234".
Day Rates-4.30 a. m .- 7.00 p. m. -are lower for "anyone" calls than for person-to-person calls.
Evening Rates-7.00 p. m .- 8.30 p. m .- are lower than Day Rates for distances above forty miles.
Night Rates-8.30 p. m .- 4.30 a. m .- are lowest and apply to sta- tion-to-station calls, excepting to nearby points.
There are no report charges on "anyone" calls, excepting when the called subscriber refuses to accept charges on a collect call and the call is not completed.
Person-to-Person Calls
Such calls are for a particular person and employ more operating labor and equipment.
If you wish to talk with a speci- fied person, give the details to the operator. Name the person desired and state that you wish to talk with him only. It saves time when you supply his telephone number.
Person-to-person rates are the same at all hours and are higher than station-to-station rates.
Appointment and messenger calls are handled at person-to-person rates, the exact amount expended for any messenger service being charged in addition.
A report charge is made on a particular person call if the called telephone is reached but the call is not completed because the desired person is not available.
United States Taxes
No tax applies to conversations for which the charge is less than 50 cents. The maximum tax on any conversation is 20 cents. Where the charge is 50 cents or more, but less than $1.00, the tax is 10 cents. Where the charge is $1.00 or more, but less than $2.00, the tax is 15 cents. Where the charge is $2.00 or more the tax is 20 cents.
Collect Calls
Charges for calls may be reversed to the called subscriber, whether placed for "anyone" or for a particular person, without additional charge; except that person-to-person rates apply to collect calls where the initial station-to-station rate is less than 20c., and a rate of 25c. applies where the initial station-to-station rate is 20c.
Rates
The operator will, on request, quote the rate to any point. Unless otherwise requested the rate quoted will be the initial period station-to-sta- tion rate in effect at that hour. The initial period is three minutes except that where the rate is five or ten cents the period is five minutes.
5

The rates listed below are for station-to-station calls and, except as noted*, for the initial period of three minutes.

General Telephone Information
Use of Party Lines
Satisfactory service on party lines depends very largely upon the willing- ness of the joint users to co-operate in their demands on the service. The Company, accordingly, requests party line subscribers, in fairness to others, to limit their conversations to five minutes and to give immediate right of way to emergency calls. The Com- pany reserves the right to terminate the service of a party line subscriber where it appears that his use of the service prevents reasonable use by other parties on the same line.
Use of Service
The Company reserves the right to restrict the amount of auxiliary serv- ice furnished in connection with any particular class of service in order to prevent any impairment in the quality of service furnished. Service shall not be used in competition with the busi- ness of the Company. The use of un- limited business service is restricted to the subscriber and to his agents and employees when engaged in his busi- ness. The use of residence service is restricted to members of the sub- scriber's household.
In connection with private branch exchange service, operating at the subscriber's premises shall be per- formed at the expense of the sub- scriber, and shall conform to such methods of operating as the Tele- phone Company may from time to time establish as being essential and desirable in order to maintain a prop- er standard of telephone service.
Failure of Service
For any complete failure of service continued more than twenty-four hours and brought to the notice of the Company in writing within ten days, the Company will make a pro rata adjustment of charge or guarantee.
Use of Equipment
All equipment is the property of the Telephone Company and must be used with due care to maintain its efficiency. Attention is particularly di- rected to the need of keeping tele- phone cords free from moisture, as wet cords are a frequent source of trouble. Instruments and apparatus shall be installed, moved or removed by the Company only and connected only with instruments or apparatus in- stalled or approved by the Company.
The equipment furnished by the Company is designed to render the best possible telephone service with a minimum of trouble and inconven- ience. Attachments or devices not fur- nished by the Company are detri- mental to this service, and their use is consequently prohibited. Our Busi- ness Office will be pleased to tell you about auxiliary equipment and service furnished by the Company.
Time Required on Orders
Changes, installations or removals of service should be requested as far as possible in advance of the date de- sired. Conditions beyond our control often involve delay in completing orders.
Identification of Employees
All employees authorized to install, change, or remove your telephone equipment, or to represent the Com- pany in any dealings with its sub- scribers, are required to wear a num- bered round badge bearing in the cen- ter the blue seal of the Bell System and around the border the words "New England Telephone and Tele- graph Co." Do not deal with persons claiming to represent the Company unless such a badge can be shown.
Telegrams by Telephone
You may telephone telegrams, cablegrams or radiograms to the Postal Telegraph-Cable Company or the Western Union Telegraph Company. The telegraph charges will appear on your monthly tele- phone bill. You may also telephone your telegrams from public and semi-public coin box telephones and deposit the charges for such mes- sages in the coin box. When calling either of these telegraph com- panies follow the instructions shown under its listing in this directory.
7
Information About the Directory
Arrangement of Listings
Listings are arranged in alphabeti- cal order by surnames, first names and initials. Names which sound alike may be spelled differently; therefore look under all possible spellings if the name you want is not found at once.
Names beginning with Mc or Mac, or with prefixes such as Des, L', La, Von, Von Der, etc., are indexed as whole words without regard to capital- ization or apostrophe.
Firm names such as "Smith, Jones & Brown Co." will be found under "Smith" and the initial "J."
The symbol "&," apostrophes, prepo- sitions, conjunctions, and titles do not affect the precedence of listings con- taining them.
Ownership of Directories
Directories are the property of the Company and should be surrendered to the distributing agent on request, or destroyed when the next issue is deliv- ered; for much annoyance results from passing calls for obsolete numbers ap- pearing in old directories. Lists of sub- scribers and telephone numbers ap- pearing in directories are copyrighted and may not be reproduced without permission.
Advertising Telephone Numbers
The use of correct telephone num- bers on stationery and business cards and in advertising matter contributes towards ease in obtaining rapid and accurate telephone service. However, attention is called to the fact that the needs of the service occasionally re- quire changes in telephone numbers. It will assist in maintaining good serv- ice if telephone numbers displayed on trucks, signs, letter-heads, business cards, etc., are corrected promptly in case of change in telephone number. The advertising of residence telephone numbers for business purposes is not permitted.
Checking Directories
In order to prevent the annoyance of calls for wrong numbers, on the receipt of each new directory you should check and correct any personal lists of numbers you frequently call.
You are urged to verify your own listing immediately upon receipt of a new directory and to report any error to your Business Office. Although every precaution is taken to insure accuracy, the Company cannot assume liability for losses due to errors in its direc- tories.
Directories of Other Cities
Directories of other cities, either in the territory of this Company or in other parts of the Bell System, may be obtained through your Business Office. Prices on application.
The Classified Telephone Directory
The Classified Telephone Directory lists Business subscribers under headings descriptive of their general business, the service they render or a commodity they sell. This helps you find "Where to Buy It" when you wish to shop by telephone or personally. It also facilitates your finding the names, addresses and telephone numbers of those in a given line of business.
Information regarding representation in the Classified Telephone Directory may be obtained through our Business Office; see page 3.

How to Use the Dial Telephone in Pittsfield
To Call a Pittsfield Telephone Not on Your Line
Look up the number in the latest telephone directory.
Remove receiver.
Listen for the Dial Tone-a steady humming sound.
Then, with the receiver still off, put your first finger firmly in the hole over the first figure of the number desired. Turn the dial until your finger strikes the finger stop. Then lift your finger and allow the dial to turn back without touching it. Dial the remaining figures of the desired number in the same way.
Note :- If your finger slips or you make a mistake in dialing, replace the re- ceiver for a few seconds; then remove it, listen for the Dial Tone, and dial the complete number again.
You should then hear the ringing sig- nal (an intermittent burr-ing sound) or, if the desired line is busy, the busy signal (a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz). If you hear neither signal, replace the receiver for a few seconds and dial the complete number again. If the same condition is found dial "Operator" and report the condition to her.
Do not replace the receiver or touch the switch hook in any way from begin- ning to end of a call. Moving the hook will cause a cut-off. If you are cut off, replace the receiver immediately. If you made the call, remove the receiver, listen for the Dial Tone, and dial the complete number again. If you did not make the call, wait until you are called again.
On completing a call replace the re- ceiver for a few seconds before dialing another.
To Call a Party on Your Own Line
On 2 or 4-Party Lines :- You will be informed by means of a card of the names and code numbers of the other parties on your line. Remove receiver. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial the code number, not the directory number, following the instructions on that card.
On Rural Lines :- When you dial the telephone number of a party on your line you will hear the busy signal and your bell will start ringing as soon as you
hang up the receiver. The bell of the party you have called will also ring. When your bell stops ringing, remove the receiver and talk. If the called party does not answer, stop the ringing by removing the receiver for a few seconds.
To Call a Telephone in Another Exchange
Remove receiver. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial "Operator."
To Call "Operator"
Remove receiver. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial once from the last hole in the dial, marked "Operator."
Dial "Operator" for
Out-of-town calls.
Assistance on a call which you have repeatedly failed to complete by dial- ing.
Instruction in dialing.
Emergency Calls - (requiring the operator's assistance) - and say "Emergency Fire" or "Emergency Police". Be sure to give your number, name and address to the person who answers.
To Call Information
Remove receiver. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial 113.
To Call Repair Service
Remove receiver. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial 114.
To Call from a Coin Box Telephone
Remove receiver. Deposit a nickel. Listen for the Dial Tone. Then dial the number desired. If your call is not com- pleted your deposit, will be returned to you after you replace the receiver.
Making Calls from Party Lines

How to Use the Dial Telephone in Windsor
To Call a Windsor Telephone Not on Your Line
Look up the number in the latest telephone directory.
Remove receiver.
Listen for the Dial Tone-a steady humming sóund.
Then with the receiver still off, put your first finger firmly in the hole over the first figure of the number desired. Turn the dial until your finger strikes the finger stop. Then lift your finger and allow the dial to turn back without touching it. Dial remaining figures of the desired number in the same way. Note :- If your finger slips or you make a mistake in dialing, replace the receiver for a few seconds; then remove it, listen for the Dial Tone and dial the complete number again.
You should then hear the ringing sig- nal (an intermittent burr-ing sound) or, if the desired line is busy, the busy signal (a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz). If you hear neither signal, replace the receiver for a few seconds and dial the complete num- ber again.
If you did not make the call wait until you are called again.
On completing a call replace the re- ceiver for a few seconds before dialing another.
