THE following marriages are printed from a list in the hand-writing of the Reverend Peter Thacher, minister of the Church at Milton, Massachusetts, from 1681 until his death, 27 Dec. 1727. They were entered in his diary, not all together, but on separate pages scattered through the book. The leaves containing the entries were subsequently removed from the volume, and were presented in their loose form by Mr. Henry MeKean to the late William Thaddeus Harris, LL.B., of Cambridge, by whom they were carefully mounted and bound, and in whose library they have since been preserved.
The first page of the record contains this endorsement with its date, both in hand-writing unknown. "A Register of Marriages in Milton from 14 Sept. 1686 to Sept. 1727, By Rev. Peter Thacher. Taken out of a volume of his Diary found among the papers of the late Rev Dr. Peter Thacher of Boston, his great grandson. Feb. 1803."
It is probable that the record of the larger portion of these marriages does not exist elsewhere, or in any other form. It is certain that of the first thirty of the list, Savage had found but six, and of these six, one was doubtful. The importance of the record, for the first time now printed, is evident to genealogists.
The Rev. Peter Thacher was born at Salem, Mass., 18 July, 1651, the son of the Rev. Thomas Thaeher of Weymouth and Boston. He was graduated at Harvard College in 1671, ordained in the ministry over the church at Milton 1 June, 1681, and died there greatly lamented and beloved, 27 Dec. 1727, after a pastorate of forty-six years. An account of his labors and useful- ness may be read in Sibley's Graduates II. 370, and a genealogy of a frag- ment in the family in the N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg. xxxviii. 13.
