IN the compilation of this Directory - the third in the series - the plan adopted last year has been generally followed, but it is believed that the work as a whole has been greatly improved upon. The List of Streets has been revised and corrected to date, and is arranged to show, under each title, the relative location of all intersecting streets ; and appending to the alphabetical directory of residents will be found a Street List of Householders - this being a reprint of the specially starred names in the general directory, arranged in the order of the house numbers on each street.
In the Directory for 1894, as well as for 1895-6, the official house num- bers assigned by the town engineer to every 25 feet of street frontage (except in the thickly settled districts, where a number is given to every 12} feet), were given in connection with the names of residents, whether appearing upon the buildings or not. The Selectmen of the town had passed an order to enforce the numbering in accordance with this plan, but a large number of householders have failed, thus far, to comply with the order. It was deemed best, therefore, to give in the present volume the numbers that appear upon the buildings, whether " official" or other- wise. With the exceptions noted, the numbers printed are the official house numbers.
The total number of names in the Directory is 6684. Out of the total names recorded, about 3200 are householders (heads of families) and are thus indicated by a special star (*).

BROOKLINE
BROOKLINE, originally a part of Boston and known in colonial times as the Muddy River Hamlet, was set off and incorporated as an independent township in 1705. The parent metropolis has reached out and absorbed the territory on either side of the town, and has so nearly surrounded Brookline as to leave but a boundary of two and one-half miles around the western corner, where it is bordered by the city of Newton. The town is about four and one-half miles long and an average of two miles wide, and contains 3,736 acres of land that is taxed. It is the most important town in Norfolk County, paying about one-third of the entire county taxes, and occupies a unique position from the fact that it is wholly isolated from other territory of the county - Boston being in Suffolk County and Newton in Middlesex. Brookline enjoys the distinc- tion of being the wealthiest town in the commonwealth, its total valuation being over $70,000,000. It is beautifully situated, and its easy accessi- bility to Boston, its numerous churches, its excellent schools, its superior water supply, its perfect system of sewerage and its well-kept streets, coupled with a popular form of town government and an unusually low rate of taxation, combine to make it an ideal place of residence, and for this it is chiefly distinguished, it having very few manufacturing indus- tries. The Beacon-street Boulevard runs diagonally across the town, almost in a straight line from the State House in Boston to the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. Electric cars upon the boulevard, and over Huntington avenue and Tremont street, furnish convenient means of transportation, and the Boston & Albany railroad has five stations within the limits of the town - one, Cottage Farm, upon the main line, and four upon the Newton Circuit branch; namely, Longwood, Brookline, Brookline Hills, and Reservoir. There is but one post-office in Brookline, the mail being delivered by carriers. There are few crowded streets; most of the residences are surrounded by ample grounds, thus insuring the best natural protection to the public health, and the death-rate is consequently low. The public buildings are of modern style, the Town Hall being of rose granite, built at a cost of $250,000, and having a seating capacity of 1200. The Public Library building cost $80,000 and contains about 45,000 volumes. A new High School building was erected last year in the residence center of the town, at a cost of $250,000, and is an enduring manifestation of the educational spirit that controls this splendid muni- cipality.
