SOCIETIES.
Springfield Musical Institute.
This Society has been in existence about two years. It numbers some forty members, and embraces nearly all the vocal talent in our midst. It gave two Concerts in the spring of 1857, consisting of Choruses, Sacred and Miscellaneous, Solos, Duetts and Trios. The pro- ceeds of the concerts were devoted to the paying of the Society's expenses, and the balance was given to the poor. During the first season, its officers were the following :
Edward Ingersoll, Esq., President. J. G. Shaw, Di- rector. Henry A. Chapin, Secretary and Treasurer. Al- bert Allin, Pianist.
The second season has been a very prosperous one. The valuable services of Mr. E. J. Fitzhugh were se- cured as Director, and a marked improvement in every performance has been the result. The whole Chorus have sung in two miscellaneous concerts of the Phil- harmonic Society, and The Sacred Oratorio of the Messiah, has been performed twice, in a manner reflect- ing great credit on the Society.
It is an institution of which we are proud, and we are gratified to learn that its affairs are in a most satis- factory state. It holds monthly meetings during the summer, and weekly ones in the fall and winter.
Present officers-Edward Ingersoll, President. Henry A. Chapin, Secretary and Treasurer. E. J. Fitzhugh, Director.
Springfield Philharmonic Society.
This is a Society of Amateur Musicians, organized in 1857, has upward of twenty active members. It re- hearses at Adey's Music Saloon. Untiring industry and perseverance has enabled it to give four Concerts during the season, three in Springfield, and one in Northampton ; besides playing the accompaniment to the Oratorio given by the Musical Institute. It has been ably directed by E. J. Fitzhugh, and through it Springfield has first listened to the sublime productions

CLERGYMEN AND SCHOOLS.
of Bethoven, Hayden, Mozart and others. Three grand Symphonies have been performed in numerous over- tures ; not a single piece of trash or music of inferiority has been produced. It has done great things towards elevating musical taste. It has a respectable fund, and is more complete in its organization than that of the sister society.
Its officers are as follows : A. S. Davis, Presi- dent. M. Dunbar, Vice President. John Fitzhugh, Leader. E. J. Fitzhugh, Director. A. A. Allen, Treas- urer. A. A. Adey, Secretary.

A very large number of parts of Rifle Muskets were completed at the end of the last fiscal year, 1856-7, which have since been assembled into finished arms. It is computed that about 12,000 of the new Rifle Muskets will be completed and ready for issue by the close of June, 1858.
The machinery and tools of the establishment have been largely increased and perfected.
The new Water Shop has been nearly completed- nearly the whole of it being occupied by the Armorers. The dam at the Upper Water Shop has been rebuilt and increased in hight ten feet, affording one of the most eligible water powers in the country. The new Shops and their whole arrangement, when completed, will have but few rivals in the country for beauty, con- venience and adaptation to the uses for which they are designed.
The entire establishment is in most successful opera- tion, and reflects great credit upon its managers.
