MUSEUM .- CEMETERY .- PUBLIC HALLS.
SPRINGFIELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY .- In December, 1859, the Library Association above mentioned appointed a Commit- tee to establish a repository for objects in natural history, historical relics and antiquities, works of art and miscellaneous curiosities, to be preserved in connection with the library. A variety of objects presented by D. L. Harris, Esq., and Judge R. A. Chapman, formed a nucleus, which received such numerous accessions that in a short time two rooms in the City Hall were assigned by the municipal government for the purposes of the Museum. The Library Associa- tion furnished the rooms with appropriate shelves and cases, which are already well filled. The collection includes about twenty stuffed quadrupeds, 250 species of birds, 80 species of fish and reptiles, 900 species of shells, small cabinets of insects, corals, and crustacea, an extensive mineralogical cabinet, and a valuable series of fossils. In addition to the natural history collections, which have outstripped the other department of the Museum, there are a large number of Indian antiquities, and of curiosities from distant countries.
