May God continue to shower His Blessings upon you, my beloved children in Christ.
ARCHBISHOP OF BOSTON
VERY REVEREND JOSEPH M. DOUGHERTY, O. S. A. Prior Provincial Augustinian Order
History of Saint Augustine's Church
Prior to the year 1846 the Catholics of Andover walked or, if fortunate enough to own one, rode their horse to Lowell, to wor- ship their God on Sunday. It was in that year that Rev. Charles French came to Law- rence where he erected a wooden chapel on the site of the present Immaculate Concep- tion Church. From that time until 1852 the Catholics of Andover assisted at Mass in this Chapel.
In the year 1852 Rev. James O'Donnell, first pastor of St. Mary's Church which was built in 1849, erected the first Catholic Church in Andover, and dedicated it to St. Augustine, the founder of the Augustinian Order. This Church was maintained as a Mission Church and was served by Fr. O'Donnell and his assistants from St. Mary's, Lawrence.
In 1866 Rev. Michael F. Gallagher, O.S.A., was appointed the first resident Pastor of St. Augustine's Parish. Father Gallagher labored in the community of Andover until his death in 1869. Father Gallagher was followed by Rev. Ambrose Mullen, O.S.A., as pastor. It was during Father Mullen's pastorate that the property where the present Church and Rectory stand, was purchased. The parish was growing rapidly and the original Chapel was becoming inadequate. At the death of Father Mullen a new Pastor was appointed in the person of Rev. Maurice J. Murphy, O.S.A. Father Murphy brought to reality the dream of Father Mullen by erecting a new Church on the property previously pur- chased. The cellar for the new Church was dug by the men of the parish. The base- ment of the new Church was used for sev- eral years while the upper Church was being completed. The completed Church, which was of wooden construction, was dedicated on September 2, 1883. Father Murphy not only provided for the spiritual wants of the people of Andover, but he also extended his Pastoral administration to the people of Ballardvale. It was through his efforts that a Chapel was erected in Ballardvale for the convenience of the people of that community. Saint Joseph's Chapel was dedicated on October 23, 1881. Father Murphy remained as Pastor until the year 1887. He was suc- ceeded by Rev. Jeremiah J. Ryan, O.S.A.
For seven years Father Ryan worked dili- gently and untiringly in the community. Hc, like his predecessor, extended his fatherly
care to include the people of North Wilming- ton. Father Ryan built a beautiful Chapel in that community and dedicated it to St. Thomas of Villanova. The Pastor and his assistant, Father Patrick Lynch, now had three communities to serve.
Father Ryan was succeeded in 1894 by Rev. Thomas A. Field, O.S.A., who remained as Pastor for only three years. Shortly after taking over as Pastor, Father Field and his parishioners suffered a sad and severe loss. On November 8, 1894 the temple which Father Murphy and the parishioners had, with much labor, erected and dedicated to the service of God had been reduced to a heap of ashes. Undaunted, both Pastor and parishioners set to work with commendable zeal to build another and still more beautiful Church than the one destroyed.
On May 6, 1895, work was begun on the foundation of the new Church, which was located on the same lot where the old Parish House stood, the latter being moved to Pearson street. The corner stone of the new Church was laid at a very impressive cere- mony held on Sunday afternoon, August 18, 1895, by Most Reverend Bishop Brady, Aux- iliary Bishop of Boston. An eloquent ser- mon was preached by the silver-toned orator, Rev. Richard A., Gleason, O.S.A., professor of English at Villanova College. This was a day the Lord had made and the Parishioners truly rejoiced as they saw the progress made under their beloved Shepherd, Father Field.
The Catholics of Andover worked zealously and sacrificed themselves unyieldingly raise the necessary funds to pay for their new Church, which would cost $40,000.
Father Field's Pastorate terminated in 1898, when after serving the parish for four years. he was transferred to Philadelphia. He was succeeded by Rev. Daniel J. O'Mahoney, O.S.A., under whose guiding hand the Church was completed in the year 1900 and was dedi- cated on May 6 of that year.
Father O'Mahoney remained as pastor for only two years after the dedication of the Church, at the end of which time he volun- teered to go to the Philippine Islands. In 1902 Rev. Charles M. Driscoll, D.D., O.S.A., was appointed pastor. In 1901 Father Michael Locke came to Andover to take up the duties of curate. Father Driscoll remained as Pastor for only one year. He was succeeded by Rev. (Continued)

James F. McGowan, O.S.A., who built the present rectory. In 1905 Rev. William J. Morrison, O.S.A., came to Andover as an assistant, to replace Father Locke.
The next Pastor of St. Augustine's Parish was Rey. Frederick S. Riordan. It was due to Father Riordan's untiring efforts and the generous cooperation of the Parishioners that the Parish boasts of a Parochial School, second to none. He purchased the Tyer property at the corner of Chestnut and Central streets. Father Riordan had the Tyer homestead remodeled and the Sisters of Notre Dame took over the residence in the fall of 1914. For four years the children attended class in the Convent. The new School was completed in September, 1918, and the full eight grades were opened to the children of the parish.
Father Riordan did not remain to see the new school open. He was transferred to St. Lawrence O'Toole Parish in Lawrence in June of 1918. Rev. John A. Nugent, O.S.A., came to take over the work of Father Riordan. In September, 1919, Father Campbell, our present pastor came as an assistant and in 1920 Father Thomas P. Fogarty, of happy and beloved memory, was also appointed an assistant. Both Father Fogarty and Father Campbell remained with Father Nugent un- til August 1926, when Father Nugent and Father Campbell were transferred to Atlantic City and Father Fogarty to Chestnut Hill. Father Riordan returned to Andover as pastor but remained only a few months, due to ill- ness and was forced to resign. In December, 1926, Rev. Charles A. Branton, O.S.A., Direc- tor of the Augustinian Mission Band, was appointed to succeed Father Riordan as Pastor. Father Branton remained as Pastor for nine years. He was assisted in his work in the parish by Rev. John A. Whelan, Rev. Michael A. Hopkins, who remained from October, 1926 to January, 1927, and Rev. Charles A. Grady, O.S.A. who came in Janu- ary to replace Father Hopkins.
Father Branton was succeeded by Rev. John A. McErlain, O.S.A., in July of 1935. Father McErlain's pastorate was for a very short duration. On September 6, 1935 Father McErlain was called to his eternal reward. The Rev. Thomas B. Austin, O.S.A., who for many years served as director of the Mission Band, was appointed to take over the pas- torate at Andover. He was assisted by Rev. John B. Leonard and Rev. Leo Hart. In
December, 1935, Rev. Henry B. Smith, O.S.A., came as an assistant to replace Father Hart who was transferred to St. Augustine's, Phila- delphia. Father Austin during his nine years as Pastor won the respect and esteem of all the people of Andover, both Catholic and non-Catholic. In April of 1942, through the generosity of Mrs. Maurice J. Curran, Sr., he erected three beautiful marble Altars and installed a new organ. The three Altars, which were donated in memory of Mr. Maurice J. Curran, were consecrated on May 7, 1942, by Rt. Rev. Monsignor Phelan.
During Father Austin's pastorate, the Augustinian Order and the people of Andover suffered a great loss by the death of Rev. John B. Leonard, O.S.A., who served as a curate here for many years. Rev. Matthew F. McDonald, O.S.A., came to Andover in April, 1939 as curate and labored untiringly and unselfishly until his untimely death on March 1, 1951. Rev. Henry B. Syvinski, O.S.A., succeeded Fr. McDonald as curate.
Father Austin remained as pastor until June of 1944, at which time he was sent to Hollywood, California to take over the Parish of Our Mother of Good Counsel. Rev. Thomas P. Fogarty, O.S.A., came from Holly- wood to succeed Father Austin, O.S.A. It was a home-coming for Father Fogarty, who had served as an assistant in this parish from 1920 to 1926. Father Fogarty in December of 1944 established the first Catholic Men's Club in this parish. The purpose of the club as pointed out by Father Fogarty, was to serve as the social part of the Holy Name Society. It was established to serve the youth of the parish, whose interest was of great im- portance in the mind of Father Fogarty. He appointed Father McDonald as the moderator of this new club. Father Fogarty's kind, gentle and fatherly spirit gained for him the love and devotion of the people of Andover.
Father Fogarty, shortly after taking over as pastor, had the Parochial School complete- ly overhauled. A new heating system was installed, the class rooms were painted, as well as the school hall. The school was put into perfect shape. Ever mindful of the youth and realizing the necessity of early Catholic train- ing, he established the first pre-primary class in St. Augustine's School in September, 1946. In his own quiet and unassuming way Father Fogarty, assisted by Fr. McDonald, Fr. Smith,

MY DEAR PARISHIONERS:
I am deeply grateful to you for the splendid cooperation and enthusiastic encouragement you have afforded me since I became Pastor of St. Augustine's Church two years ago.
Within these two short years with your generous support, it has been possible for us to completely renovate all our parochial buildings.
This parish as it exists today, is a living proof that we, of the present, owe a great debt of gratitude to the priests and people of the past who were once a part of its life and activities. Unknown and unremembered though many of the past are, their good deeds and generous sacrifices speak to us from every brick and stone of our four fine parish buildings. They not only speak of their piety, love of the Church, self-denial and many other virtues, but they do more, they challenge us of the present to continue in the same good spirit the work which they began or helped to extend.
Our Church is a most important institution of this community. Its efficiency in the pres- ent, its progress in the future rests largely, not with the priests alone, but with all the lay ment- bers of the parish.
May the memory of the accomplishments of the past one hundred years therefore serve, not only as a record of the fine things of the past, but also as a spur to further advancement in the years which lie ahead.
May God bless you, my beloved parishioners of St. Augustine's.

and Fr. James A. Flaherty, rendered to the Parish of St. Augustine outstanding service spiritually and materially. Father Fogarty was transferred to Waterford, New York in June, 1950, but the Lord had other plans. He died in the Bon Secours Hospital on October 4, 1950, and was buried from the Church of St. Augustine where he had labored so faithfully.
Father Fogarty was succeeded as pastor by a priest who was no stranger to the people of Andover. Rev. Patrick J. Campbell, O.S.A., had served as an assistant in this parish from! 1919 to 1926. He was Pastor of St. Mary's and St. Augustine's Churches of Lawrence where he accomplished great things. Father Campbell took up his duties as pastor of St. Augustine's Parish in July, 1950, and during these short two years has demonstrated his ability as a real true shepherd of souls and as an efficient manager of Church property.
In the late summer of 1950 he completely renovated the interior of the rectory. In 1951 he concentrated his attention on the Sisters' Convent which he renovated and beautified. Next, his attention was turned toward the church. In June of 1952 he set out to put the Church in perfect condition for the fitting celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the parish. A completely fireproof enclosed exit was constructed on the west side of the Church, which facilitates the emptying of the
Church for the greater safety of the parish- ioners.
A side entrance on the east side of the Church between the Church and the rectory was built for the convenience of those who found the front approach to the Church most difficult. This new side entrance is approached by a ramp and three steps of five inch risers. The interior of the Church has been beauti- fully and fittingly decorated. The lower walls of the Sanctuary are panelled in hand carved walnut which set off our ornate marble main Altar. The upper walls of the Sanctu- ary are done in rose, with a tapestry overlay with Ecclesiastical symbols imposed in 22 karat gold-leaf. The ceiling of the body of the Church is done in a delicate blue and the walls are mottled in grayish green. The dado in the body of the Church is done in walnut to correspond to the panelling in the Sanctu- ary. The antiquated steam pipes have been removed from the side walls and are replaced by recessed convector radiators. The aisles have been newly covered with various shades of brown rubber tile, which ties in with the entire color scheme.
Our Church today, thanks to the untiring efforts and careful planning of Father Campbell and the generous support of the parishioners is one of the most beautiful Churches in New England and one of which we of St. Augustine's may justly be proud.
"Brighten the remembrance of these dead with the evergreen of good works and the roses of prayer. This is the most beautiful wreath to lay upon the grave of your departed shepherds."

DEDICATED SEPTEMBER 8, 1918
St. Augustine's Parochial School, located on Central street, was built by Rev. Frederick S. O'Riordan, O.S.A. It was dedicated on September 8, 1918.
Our Parochial School actually started in September, 1914. For the first four years classes were held in the Convent.
Our School, under the capable guidance of the Sisters of Notre Dame, has from its beginning maintained a high standard of scholarship.
We are proud of the boys and girls of the Parish who have gone forth from the portals of St. Augustine's School.
We are all indebted to the self sacrificing Sisters of Notre Dame.

To the Priests and the Parishioners of St. Augustine's in Andover.
As you gaze in retrospect over the century that has passed, and contemplate with pardonable pride the great growth of your parish from its humble beginning, may you be inspired to carry on in our time the good work begun by that handful of pioneer souls who labored so zealously to build the great parish of St. Augustine's.
To Father Campbell and the priests of the parish go our sincere wishes for continued progress in administering the spiritual and temporal affairs of this great parish which now stands on the threshold looking forward with confidence and with faith to its second century of service to the Catholic families of Andover.

They Study at A & P
The business of the men and women of A & P is efficient food dis- tribution. They make no claim to being educators, but they often find themselves in the role nonetheless.
Because of A & P's recognized leadership in the food industry, hundreds of organizations, in all parts of the country, visit A & P opera- tions each year to see how the food they eat and feed their families is manufactured, or how the food they produce is handled.
Among these groups, for example, are:
1. Students -- from 4th and 5th grade pupils to college students of marketing, who tour A & P's bakeries and manufacturing plants.
2. Women's clubs and other consumer groups who visit stores to learn how they are run, and to see demonstrations of meat cutting, produce selection, etc.
3. Farmers who grow the food A & P distributes who visit ware- houses to see how food is graded, packed and moved from farm to store.
The men and women of A & P are proud of these visits and the interest in A & P that prompts them. They are proud of the operations which these groups see, and of the policies pioneered 93 years ago, which enable them to do the nation's most efficient job of food distribution.
And they are glad to help the public understand the teamwork between producers and distributors that makes America the best fed nation in the world.
