INTRODUCTORY.

Again we present our patrons and the public with a new edition of the CAMBRIDGE DIRECTORY, No. 35 of the regular series, for their use, and we trust their approval.

The difficulty of compiling a city directory is seldom understood, and is not easily explained. Dependent as we are upon local patronage, it is an absolute necessity that we have the support of the entire business commu- nity, who derive the largest portion of benefit from such a work.

The attention of persons using the directory is directed to the "improved method of printing the names," ditto marks being used to designate all after the first surname of each kind (excepting advertisers' names, which are printed in full). This method brings out the Christian names more promi- nently, and saves " time " in referring to any name. This improvement was suggested to us by several of our patrons in Cambridge, it having been in use previously in other city directories in the State.

A city directory contains a great amount of information concerning the charitable, religious, public and private institutions of the city, which make it a valuable present record as well as an historical authority.

Every person should have, at their business place or residence, or both, a directory of the city from time to time as published, not only as a daily con- venience, but as a valuable record of local history.

Orders for our directories come to us from distant parts of this and foreign countries, showing that their circulation is not limited to the cities they represent.

Americans visiting Europe will find our Directories on file at Messrs. Henry F. Gillig & Co.'s American Exchange and Reading Room, 449 Strand, Charing Cross, London, W. C., and 35 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris.

Persons consulting the Directory are reminded of the "importance " of knowing the precise spelling of a name before looking for it, as names pro- nounced the same are often spelled quite differently, and appear on different pages.

A directory of Harvard College, Professors and Students resident in Cam- bridge will be found on page 436.

For the support we receive from the business men of Cambridge, as well as the citizens who do business in Boston, we are under many obligations ; also to the officers of the various societies and institutions for information furnished us we return our sincere thanks.

The following shows the increase in names over last year :-
