PREFACE. C
THE present is the seventh number of this little annual. Though comparatively a small volume the labor and time expended upon it is much greater than is generally sup- posed. Indeed few persons are aware of the many difficul- ties which present themselves in the compilation of a Directory of a city no larger than Cambridge. It is not only necessary that every family, in every house, should be called upon, but every store, workshop and place of business should be visited. Having performed this most essential part of the labor, it often appears that the information, fur- nished, (it may be by some member of the family not en- tirely qualified,) is not entirely correct. Then comes the labor of arranging names, correcting errors, and reading proofs by which a large amount of time is consumed.
Having had, however, several years experience in this department of labor, the publisher flatters himself that the present number will be found as accurate as it is possible to make a work of this kind. That the public may know something of the labor bestowed on this volume, we would state that the alterations for the Directory for 1854, have been as follows :
Names added, 977
[ Whole No. of names
Names expunged, 732
Other changes, .643
last year, . .4138 Do. do. present year, .. 4383
Whole No. alterations, 2352
Increase, . . .245
The calculations for the calendar pages were made by Mr. Isaac Bradford, a gentleman connected with the Nau- tical Almanac office in this city.
