EMERSON PIANO-FORTES.

SQUARE GRAND MIS
THE EMERSON PIANO COMPANY.
Are desirous that their instruments shall be subjected to the strictest tests. By care in selecting materials, and by rigorously insisting upon perfect work, they produce instruments that are ABSOLUTELY UNSURPASSED. The mechanism of the Piano-Forte is simple and easily understood. There is no secret nor mystery about it, as some shrewd ad- vertisers would have the public believe. The solidity of the frame and case, the well-chosen, well-seasoned and well-wrought wood of the sounding-board, the perfection of the hammers, dampers and strings; the unyielding firmness of the pins, the scientific voicing and tuning- these are the elements necessary to form Perfect and Satisfactory Tone.
More than Twenty-three Thousand of these Pianos have been made and
sold, and the standard of excellence was never so high as now.
Superior Upright Pianos to Rent. Every Piano Warranted for 7 Years,
To persons of musical taste, willing to trust their own ears, the Company submits its instru- ments, confident that in sonority, evenness, crisp action, sustaining power and durability, they are not anywhere excelled,

INTRODUCTORY.
THE usual time for a new edition of the CAMBRIDGE DIRECTORY has again come, and we present No. 29 of the regular series to our patrons, with the confidence of its welcome reception by them, as well as by the public gen- erally.
As cities grow in importance and population, the direc- tory increases in value, as a book of reference, until large cities like Boston and New York could not possibly get along without their annual publication. A good directo- ry is a great benefit to a city, not only to the citizens, but to strangers and visitors, who are constantly referring to its pages for information of some kind. We also often receive orders from distant parts of the country for our di- rectories, which show that their circulation is not neces- sarily limited to the cities they represent.
We wish especially to call the attention of persons using the directory, to the importance of knowing the precise spelling of a name, before looking for it, as names, pro- nounced the same, but spelled in various ways, will ap- pear on different pages, and at quite a distance from each other.
The revival of business, which has so long been looked for, has at last come, and we trust that the merchants and manufacturers of Cambridge will feel the effects of it to such " an extent, that, when our next edition is published, we shall receive an increased patronage from them.
Names in Directory 1879,
17,733
66 66 1880, 18,250
Increase, 517
Our agents have received the usual courteous attention from all with whom they have come in contact, while ob- taining the information for this number, and with many thanks for the same,
We remain very respectfully,
GREENOUGH & CO.,
BOSTON, Jan. 1, 1880.
