INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting No. 30 of the CAMBRIDGE DIRECTORY, the pub- lishers take this opportunity to congratulate the citizens and busi- ness men on the return of business prosperity, and the flourishing condition of our manufacturing interests, giving occupation to hundreds of skilled mechanics, who in turn patronize our local stores, and cause that activity in business which was so noticeable before the panic of 1873. Very few vacant houses have been found by our canvassers, and it is evident that capitalists will soon find it profitable to build the hundreds of houses that will be needed by another year in different parts of our city for the large increase of population which is now taking place.
. "The newly annexed territory taken from Belmont the past year, embraces 570 acres, one hundred of which are included in Fresh Pond, about 200 acres of the remainder are low marshy ground necessary for the city to control in order to prevent nui- sances becoming established which might drain injurious matter into the pond." It also adds over 600 persons to our population.
The map has been corrected and the new territory added, and is for sale in cloth covers at the bookstores.
We are happy to state that with the return of business activity, our patronage has increased, and our advertising department contains the business cards of a large number of the substantial business men of both Cambridge and Boston. For this increased patronage we present our sincere thanks.
The following shows the large increase in names over last year :
Names in Directory, 1880, 18,250
1881, 19,786
Increase, 1,536
We remain, very respectfully, W. A. GREENOUGH & CO.,
BOSTON, Jan. 1, 1881. Editors and Publishers.

EMERSON PIANO-PORTES.
THE EMERSON PIANO COMPANY
Are desirous that their instruments shall be subjected to the strictest tests. By care in selecting materials, and by rigorously insisting upon perfect work, they produce instruments that are ABSOLUTELY UNSURPASSED. The mechanism of the Piano-Forte is simple and easily understood. There is no secret or mystery about it, as some shrewd ad- vertisers would have the public believe. The solidity of the frame and case, the well-chosen, well-seasoned and well-wrought wood of the sounding-board, the perfection of the hammers, dampers and strings; the unyielding firmness of the pins, the scientific voicing and tuning- these are the elements necessary to form Perfect and Satisfactory Tone.
More than twenty threethousand of these Planos have been made and sold, and the Standard of Excellence was never so high as now. Superior Upright Planos to Rent. Every Plano Warranted for Seven Years.
To persons of musical taste, willing to trust their own ears, the Company submits its instru- ments, confident that in sonority, evenness, crisp action, sustaining power and durability, they are not anywhere excelled.
