LOWELL IN 1839.
During the past year, the city of Lowell has advanc- ed with steady progress. Two new companies have been incorporated for manufacturing purposes. The " Massachusetts Cotton Mills," with a capital of $1,- 200,000, was incorporated in February, 1839. Since which time, the corporation has purchased of the Pro - prietors of Locks and Canals on Merrimack river the land at the junction of the Merrimack and the Concord rivers, with four mil! privileges. Two of their mills have been erected, several blocks of boarding-houses been put up, and some of them are already in occupa- tion. The residue of the mills and boarding-houses will be erected in the present year, and two of the mills will be put into operation.
The other company, called the " Whitney Mills," was incorporated with a capital of $100,000. This company manufactures milled blankets. They have organized, and gone into operation in the stone mill, in Belvidere. These blankets are spoken of in high terms of commendation.
In addition to these new corporations, there has been formed a benevolent association, which promises great good. It is called the " Lowell Hospital Association,',
