PREFACE.

FOUR years having elapsed since the publication of a Lowell Directory, no apology is needed for presenting a new one to the public. Every effort has been made to render this work correct, and it is believed that it is as perfect as can be, when it is considered that a portion of the population of Lowell is constantly shifting; but where a person is once located, he can usually be traced for a year, if he remains in the city.

It has been customary heretofore to specially designate the residents of Centralville, but it is not done in this Directory, except in cases where per- sons reside on a street which has its name repeated elsewhere in the city. The fire at Ayer's City, after the canvass of the city was completed, disar- ranged a few whose business or residence was in that locality, and corrections were made in several instances, but to have corrected all would have required a re-canvass of a large portion of the city. The "Hundred Days' Men " are located in the Directory where found when the canvass was made.

Whether a new Directory was needed may be judged by the following fig- ures : Number of names in last Directory, about 9950; in this one, 8505, of which only 1657 remain as they did four years ago; 3378 have changed in some respect, and 3470 are new names. Of the 9950 names in the last Direc- tory, only 5035-a trifle over one-half-appear in this work. In 1860, Lowell contained 36,827 inhabitants. If the proportion be the same now to the number of names in the Directory, the population of the city would be about 32,500.

In the Military Record, 4639 names appear, which added to those in the General Directory make 13,144, though the same names frequently appear in each.

The publisher tenders his thanks to the City Council of Lowell, subscribers and advertisers, for what they have done to assist him in the publication ; also to all who have given him information or assisted him in any way.
