SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
In submitting the Annual Report for the municipal year of 1879, we are more forcibly than ever reminded of the loss which our town has sustained in the death of our late asso- ciate, Dr. O. F. Seavey, which occurred June 12th, last. An honored citizen, and a faithful and efficient officer, has been suddenly taken away in the midst of his usefulness, and will long be missed in this community.
We are able to show a reduction of the town debt of over twenty five hundred dollars, although no appropriation was made for that purpose at the last annual meeting. In view of the unusual expenditures of the year, we congratu- late the town on this favorable exhibit of the finances.
The road at the Duck Hole, so called, which was ordered widened and straightened by the County Commissioners, has been completed, to our entire satisfaction, and accepted by the Commissioners. We were unable to contract for this work for the sum voted by the town, at the annual meeting, $200, and accordingly made the contract with Mr. J. L. Blaisdell, for $325, this being considerably less than any proposals offered. In addition to the work as laid out by the Commissioners, we contracted with Mr. Blaisdell for widen- ing and straightening the road from the Duck Hole bridge to the point of beginning as per plan of the Commissioners, at a cost of $30. . This, with some additional necessary work, made the total cost $374.75.
4
SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
The building of the sidewalk to Merrimacport involved also the expenditure of a greater sum than that voted by the town, the total cost of this being $405.50.
The bridge near the Engine House, over Cobbler's Brook, so called, is in need of extensive repairs. The sum of $58.29 has been expended here during the year, and we recommend a special appropriation for further repairs.
On petition of many leading citizens we have deepened the well in the Square, replaced the old pump with a new one of approved construction, and placed a granite trough, at a total cost of $342.54. It is confidently believed that this well will now furnish a plentiful supply of water during the en- tire year.
New railing has been built nearly all the way from the town landing to Shiretown, so called, at an expense of $110.35. This work was imperative, travel on the road being endangered by the poor condition of the railing.
New railing is needed on the River Road leading from the foot of Kendrick's Hill to the bridge at the Duck Hole.
We have effected insurance on the school-houses, including furniture and fixtures in the High School building and the Merrimacport house for a term of five years.
It being apparent that a necessity existed for such altera- tions as would make the lock-up in the Town House avail- able, we have caused granite steps to be put in, so that en- trance can be had from the outside of the building, at an expense of $154.53.
Only one fire has occurred during the year, the house of Andrew Brown having been totally destroyed on Saturday, Nov. 1st, caused probably by defective flue.
Our thanks are due to Messrs. Boyd and McClure, of Boston, for their beautiful present of a "View of the City
5
SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
of Boston," which has been hung on the walls of our Pub- lic Library.
The guide-boards in town are in good condition, new ones having been put up at the Harriman road near the foot of Bear Hill, and at Merrimacport, near, the town landing.
