ANNUAL REPORT

SELECTMEN'S REPORT

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

The sixty-seventh annual report of the Town of Merrimac is herewith presented for your consideration in accordance with Chapter 40, Section 49 of the General laws of Massachusetts.

The Board of Selectmen organized with Ralph L. Buzzell as Chairman, Hazen M. Emery as Clerk, and Arthur D. Lockwood as the third member. The Board organized as a Board of Health and Soldiers Relief Com- mission with the same officers and members. W. Harold Whiting was designated as agent of the Board of Health. Ralph L. Buzzell was appointed Co-Ordinator of WPA or other Federal or State relief projects for the term of one year.

The Board is glad to state that no special meetings were necessary during the past year to raise additional funds, and wish to call your special attention to the fact that they were able to close the year without any out- standing revenue loans, the only outstanding loans being Tax Title Loans in the amount of $12,123.68.

The local rationing board as appointed by the Se- lectmen is comprised of the following members. Chair- man Ralph L. Buzzell, Clerk, James P. Flynn and third member W. Harold Whiting. The Defense Saving Com- mittee with Arthur D. Lockwood is still functioning.

The Board of Selectmen wishes to express its ap- preciation for the cooperation and work so efficiently per- formed by the Town Accountant W. Harold Whiting dur- ing the past year, and also the various departmental heads who have so willingly assisted in making the past year such a successful one.

Board of Selectmen.

ANNUAL REPORT OF MERRIMAC BOARD OF PUBLIC WELFARE 1942

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

The three members elected to the Board of Public Welfare at the Annual Town Meeting held March 2, 1942, met on March 9, 1942 and organized as follows. Hazen M. Emery Chairman, Ellen M. Wallace, Clerk, and Frederick A. Small as third member.

Mrs. Ellen M. Wallace was designated as Local W. P. A. Certifying Agent, and Hazen M. Emery, Local Select- ing Agent for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

We are pleased to note that the Welfare situation in the Town of Merrimac is gradually becoming better and with all the defense employment should be much lighter during the coming year.

During the past year we had a decrease of 12 families on Welfare and 2 on A.D.C.

10

ANNUAL REPORT

The Board wishes at this time to thank all Federal, State and Local Departments who have in any way help- ed to lighten our duties as Administrators of Relief in the Town of Merrimac.

REPORT OF MERRIMAC BUREAU OF OLD AGE ASSISTANCE

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

The Old Age Assistance Board for the year 1942, namely Ellen M. Wallace, Chairman, Hazen M. Emery Clerk and Frederick A. Small as third member, submit the following report.

On January 1, 1942 there were 123 active cases in Merrimac, during the year 12 new cases were added and 21 cases were closed leaving 114 active cases as of Dec. 31, 1942.

The itemized account of receipts and expenditures appears in the Town Accountant's report.

We have been able to stay within our appropriation during the past year and hope to see at least as light a case load in 1943.

Respectfully submitted, ELLEN M. WALLACE, HAZEN M. EMERY, FREDERICK A. SMALL

Merrimac Bureau of Old Age Assistance.

TOWN OF MERRIMAC

REPORT OF CO-ORDINATOR OF RELIEF PROJECTS

To the Board of Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

Having been appointed Co-Ordinator of W.P.A. or other State and Federal Relief Projects by the Board of Selectmen at their meeting of March 9, 1942, I respect- fully submit the following report.

During the past year due to the general reduction of projects and W.P.A. reductions no new projects have been acceptable for new programs, therefore we have been forced to work the following projects .-

Commodity Distribution.

Moth.

Farm to Market.

Assessors Mapping. Road Construction (Fire Lanes At Lake Attitash ) .

As the W.P.A. program is coming to an end it appears that the town will no longer need to plan for further pro- jects, the State having notified the Town to this effect.

Thanking all who have contributed during the past year to make this a successful endeavor and trusting that times will be so much better that this type of relief work will never be necessary again.

Respectfully submitted,

RALPH L. BUZZELL,

W. P. A. Co-Ordinator.

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE CEMETERY COMMISSION

We hereby submit a report of the developments in the department during the year of 1942.

With the available funds of only $550.00 for the care of three cemeteries we have been able to keep the grounds and lots in fairly good condition, but have had some trouble in getting help and some extra expense.

At the present time we have over two hundred Per- petual Care lots many of them costing us more money for their care than the interest on the trust funds, but as many of these lots are located in the central parts of the cemeteries, it seemed necessary to keep them in good condition or they would detract from the general ap- pearance of the whole cemetery.

With careful management we hope this year to be able to make the cemeteries a credit to the Town, and to be complemented by many out of Town visitors who visit them.

Respectfully submitted,

CHAS. A. LANCASTER, E. C. HARGRAVES, CHARLES L. LANCASTER.
