SELECTMEN'S REPORT

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac: !

The seventy-first annual report of the Town of Mer- rimac is herewith. presented, for your consideration in ac- cordance with Chapter 40, Section 49, , of the General Laws of Massachusetts.

The Board of Selectmen organized for the year as fol- 1 : 1 lows : ·

Chairman Kenneth E. Haskell

Clerk

J. Arthur Ollis

Other Member Ralph L. Buzzell

The Board also organized with the same officers as a Board of Health and Soldiers Relief Commission. W. Har- old Whiting was designated as Agent of the Board of Health.

We have again finished a year with no outstanding debt of any kind, and show on our books a substantial cash balance.

We feel that there are, a few necessary replacements that should be made as regards equipment and these will be taken care of with special articles at the anual town meet- ing.

1

We wish to thank the Department of Corporations and Taxation, and the Bureau of Accounts for their help and advice this past year and also to express our appreciation to W. Harold, Whiting who has not only performed his own duties efficiently but has been very co-operative and helpful in all ways, we also wish to thank departmental heads for their assistance during the past year.

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

All the financial transactions of this Board will be found in the report of the Town Accountant.

Respectfully submitted, KENNETH E. HASKELL, J. ARTHUR OLLIS, RALPH L. BUZZELL, Board of Selectmen.

REPORT OF THE MERRIMAC BOARD OF PUBLIC WELFARE

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac :

The members elected to the Board of Public Welfare organized as follows:

Chairman

Hazen M. Emery

Clerk Ellen M. Wallace

Member Harriett F. Bigelow

This year we have been able not to exceed our appro- priation and have a small transfer of $500.00 allowable. However, with the increase of number of recipients during the latter part of the year it appears that additional funds will have to be raised in 1947.

The Aid to Dependent Children expenses for the year 1947 will in our estimation be about the same and we feel that we should be able to stay within the same appropria- tion.

We feel that perhaps during another year that there should not be too much of an increase in the case load and that we shall be able to meet state requirements without too much of an increase.

We wish to thank Federal, State and local depart- ments for help received during the past year.

Respectfully submitted, HAZEN M. EMERY, ELLEN M. WALLACE, HARRIETTT F. BIGELOW, Board of Public Welfare.

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

REPORT OF MERRIMAC BUREAU OF OLD AGE ASSISTANCE

To the Citizens of the Town of Merrimac:

The Old Age Asistance Bureau for the year 1946 or- ganized as follows:

Chairman

Hazen M. Emery

Clerk

Harriett F. Bigelow

Member

Ellen M. Wallace

During the past year the board has handled the fol- lowing number of cases-

Active cases Jan. 1, 1946 94

New cases added during the year 14

Cases closed during the year 14

Active cases Dec. 31, 1946

94

The account of the expenses and receipts will be shown in detail in the Town Accountant's report.

Due to the increase in the cost of living and the subse- quent raise in the State Budget for Old Age recipients with mandatory minimum budgets it will be necessary to ask for a considerable increase in this year's budget. This in- crease went into effect last October and was taken care of by transfers at the special meeting held in the Fall. This year as we will have to raise for a full year period it appears that the Board will have to ask for $40,000.00 to meet state and federal requirements.

Respectfully submitted,

HAZEN M. EMERY, HARRIETT F. BIGELOW, ELLEN M. WALLACE, Merrimac Bureau of Old Age Assistance.

REPORT OF THE CEMETERY COMMISSION

We hereby submit the report in the department dur- ing the year of 1946.

We have had the same trouble the past year to keep the cemeteries in good condition on account of not being able to find reliable help, and the large expense of taking care of private lots of which there are over one hundred and twenty.

We are obliged to pay for the care of these lots out . of our appropriation amounting to around three hundred and seventy-five dollars and the parties who own the lots pay the money back to the Town, so that we are that much short for the use of money for the cemeteries.

We also are obliged to pay for digging graves which amounts to several hundred dollars. The Town collects for this, but the expense of the work is deducted from our. appropriation.

23

MERRIMAC TOWN REPORT

The roads in Locust Grove cemetery have had very little care since the beginning of the war and three of the roads up the hill are in very bad condition, so that we would advise at least three or four hundred dollars of our appro- priation this year be used for the roads.

Therefore we are asking for an appropriation of twen- ty-five hundred dollars which we hope will keep the ceme- teries in proper condition.

Respectfully submitted,

E. C. HARGRAVES, CECILE WELCH, C. A. LANCASTER,
