Many small sums of money were paid for Restitution in Property damage cases, as a result of Juvenile Vandalism. without arrests.

In some cases complaints were not considered because of the extreme youth of the defendants.

Stolen Property to the estimated sum of $700.00 was recovered, during investigation and prosecution of some of the cases of Breaking and Entering, in the Nightime.

Some inhabitants were victimized by Fly -- by -- Night Salesmen who would collect a cash, Down Payment with only a promise to deliver the merchandise in two weeks, they leave incorrect identification (if any). The victims being overjoyed at their contract bargaining, forget to note the Registration of their Vehicle, or to check with Police until the expiration of the two-weeks, the sales- man is then in parts unknown.

The purchase of a new Cruiser is to be requested at the Annual Town Meeting. The present Cruiser has been in service since May 7, 1955 and its repair cost will be mounting, while its turn-in value will be diminishing.

I desire to thank the Honorable Board of Selectmen, His Honor, Judge Martin F. Connelly, the Associate Justices, the Clerk of Courts, the Probation Officer, Officers

REPORT OF THE PLAYGROUND COMMISSION FOR THE YEAR OF 1957

To the Citizens and the Honorable Board of Selectmen :

Mr. George Stevens was elected Chairman of the commission for the year. Merrill B. Smith, Clerk; Henry D. Lay, Arthur Cloyd and Maurice Carey constitute the remainder of the commission.

This year there was a low spot in the the tennis court at the playground. The Rock Asphalt Co. resurfaced the

entire court at no charge. The Haverhill Chain Link Fence Co. put up the fence as far as the money went. We hope to finish the job this year. The lines were in- stalled and the nets put up and they got a lot of play in spite of the fence not stopping the balls from going over the bank.

We had Mr. Joralmon clean the area in the rear of the courts for a picnic spot. We hope to install fireplaces this year with tables and benches for picnickers and also for the use of the supervised children at play.

Supervised Play :

There was an average of approximately 55 children daily who took part in the play this year under the capable care of Mr. William Whiting, Jr. and Mrs. Martin.

New games and handicraft work were added to the list this year. A handicraft display was put in Winslow's store for the public to view and winners ajudged and awarded prizes. We hope to continue this work as it is improving all the time. The year finished with a trip to the beach and lunch at the State Park paid for by the Fence Committee. The Lions Club furnished the games and handicraft material for the summer.

We wish at this time to thank the Lions Club foi their help in this work and we trust they will cooperate in the future.

Respectfully submitted, HENRY D. LAY
