A general statement of appropriations and expenditures under the different departments is given below, the details of which will appear in the proper place.

PAUPER DEPARTMENT.

The expense in this account exceeds the appropriation $180.93; this extra expense being caused by sickness. Six have died dur- ing the year, viz : Simon C. Phelps, O. D. Wait, Henry Baker, Norman McEachan, Miss Harriet Graves, Mrs. John Jesser.

The number of persons who have received full support during the whole or part of the year was eight. Of the above number, one was supported in the insane asylum. Five are now receiving full support. There is one child under twelve years of age in charge of the Board, who has a father and mother living, but they do nothing towards his support.

The number of families receiving aid, residing and having le- gal pauper settlement in this town, was fourteen, comprising thirty-four persons, seventeen males and seventeen females. Of these, five males and six females were under fourteen years of age.

Three families, comprising twelve persons-six males and six females-having a legal pauper settlement in this town, but now residing in other towns, have been aided by our order.

HIGHWAYS AND BRIDGES.

There are forty-six miles of public highways in this town. The same was divided into sections and placed in the hands of Francis S. Warner, John O'Neil, Robert Damon, and Henry C. Nash, as highway surveyors, to repair and keep in order.

The bridge near Obed Hemingway's was found to be in an un- safe condition, and a new one was built at an expense of $55.

There has been a very great expense this year in the way of plank for bridges and sluices. The bridge near James' mill and two iron bridges in Haydenville, have been new planked. We have bought during the year 27,420 feet of plank at an expense of $398.65 (which will appear in the Contingent Account Re- port), nearly all of which has been used. The bridges were con- sidered unsafe without new planking, and the surveyors consider

5

the money well expended in putting in new sluices, a matter which on some of the roads had been neglected for a long time. We consider the repairs so made to be good for at least five years.

NEW TOWN WAYS.

Several sections of town ways have been laid out and accepted. The town voted to instruct the Treasurer to borrow, not to ex- ceed $250, to pay the expense of surveying and working said ways, the same to be assessed in the taxes for the ensuing year. The amount expended on account of these ways was $136.76.

For the bridge across Mill river, near John Mack's, $275 was raised, and $258.73 expended.

CONTINGENT ACCOUNT.

The amount of this account is much larger than usual, occa- sioned by the payment of $165 for School Committees' services in 1885, and the unusually large bill for bridge plank, $398.65, mention of which was made in the highway and bridge account.

SIDEWALK ACCOUNT.

For Sidewalks, the town voted to raise $400, one-half to be assessed on the abuttor, and $200 in addition, the same to be raised wholly as a town tax, thus making the town appropriation $400. Of this amount, $202.81 has been expended south of the Williamsburg depot, of which amount $47.28 was assessed upon the abuttors. $217.27 was expended north of the depot, of which amount, $23.66 was assessed upon the abuttors. In the new walks built in South street and Williams street, $25 was allowed by the Selectmen for each walk, and the balance of the expense was paid by the abuttors, which in each case amounted to over $25. The amount of money actually expended by the town for walks is $349.14, leaving a balance in the Treasurer's hands of $50.86 to the credit of Sidewalk account.

The Treasurer's report shows cash on hand $138.49, which amount would have been $275.25, but for the paying for the new Town Ways $136.75, which was paid from cash on hand.

The amount reported by our Treasurer as due on Collector's bills for the past two years, $434.71, is the amount due from Smith Charities. The question as to whom they shall pay their taxes is now before the Court for decision.

Ten thousand dollars of the town's indebtedness becomes due Jan. 1st, 1888, for payment of which the town must take action.
