66 Lawrence, 18 00

22

The undersigned have carefully examined the foregoing ac- counts, and find them correctly cast and well vouched. The attention of the town is directed to two subjects worthy of their consideration. First, the large amount of taxes remitted. Last year's Report gave this item as $235 20. This year it reaches the sum of $381 70. May not some better method be adopted for the collection of our public taxes than the one heretofore pur- sued. Second, with regard to the support of paupers, it seems necessary to say a word. It appears that the town owns 115 acres of land, in connection with their almshouse, besides wood- land in Lawrence. The expense of cultivating this large farm is considerable, because, but little is furnished by the inmates. The interest at 6 per cent on the real and personal property of the establishment added to other necessary expenses, bring the board of each pauper at $2 15 per week. We are aware that even this sum is less than some other towns in the State incur in supporting their paupers. Our town farm has been managed ex- ceedingly well for several years by the present efficient superin- tendent, but still it is a question claiming the consideration of the town, whether an economical policy may not render the sale of a portion of their real estate advisable.

GEORGE FOSTER, WILLIAM JENKINS, Auditors. GEORGE WORCESTER,
