The Road Commissioners would recommend to the Town that the sum of $6000 be appropriated for the repairs of highways for the year ensuing.

At the annual Town Meeting of 1875 there was the sum of $500 appropriated, to be expended by the Road Commis- sioners for the purposes of constructing a Reservoir on Summer Street, to be used in case of fire. The Commission- ers let the job out by contract to the firm of Howard & Stack, they being the lowest bidders. After excavating seven feet they struck a ledge and water. They soon found it necessary to keep a pump in operation day and night. The depth is sixteen feet from the covering stone and sixteen feet in diam- eter. Aside from there being a number of springs running into it, there is a cast-iron pipe laid leading from a brook near by, that also runs in. After its completion the Engineers of the Fire Department tested its capacity, and found that after using water from it nearly two hours, there was over three feet of water left.

The whole expense being $499.39.

JAMES H. SMITH, JOHN B. ABBOTT, GEORGE F. BAKER,

February 7th, 1876.

Road Commissioners.

REPORT OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.

TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN :

Gentlemen, - In compliance with Article IX. of the Rules and Regulations of the Fire Department, I would respectfully submit this, my first annual report.

FORCE OF DEPARTMENT.

The entire force of this Department consists of one Chief and four Assistant Engineers, sixteen members for the steamer company, with one engineman, and thirty-eight mem- bers for the hand-engine company. Total, sixty men.

APPARATUS.

Is in good condition, and comprises one third-class steamer, single engine, and one hand engine, with a two-wheel hose- carriage attached to each engine. There are hooks and ladders at the steamer's house, also ladders at Shawshin's house at Ballard Vale.

HOSE.

There are eleven hundred feet of two and one-half inch hose belonging to the steamer, in good condition ; one hundred feet of this is new rubber hose, bought last November. There are two hundred feet of two and one-fourth inch hose which is not reliable, and ought to be sent to No. 2's house for their use. The hand engine has four hundred and fifty feet of two and one-fourth inch hose, which is good and reliable, and three hundred feet of old hose not very valuable ; two hun- dred and fifty feet of this is two-inch, and would recommend this to be sold.
