REV. HENRY CLARK COOMBS.

Rev. Henry Clark Coombs, the oldest resident of the town and the oldest Baptist clergyman in the country with but one exception, died Oct. 27th, aged 94 years.

His physical and mental powers were remarkably pre- served until near his death. He was a fine type of the old-time Baptist minister who made the most of his oppor- tunities and obeyed the Master's call at once, and with such preparation as he possessed he performed an important ser- vice by supplying a much needed want among the smaller country churches. He was a man of sweet spirit, discreet, prudent and a safe counselor. He belonged to a class whose remembrance should be held in great respect. Rugged and upright in character, firm and decided in con- viction, direct and abrupt in speech, well versed in the Scriptures, self-sacrificing and faithful in labors, affection- ate and devoted to his family and his friends, pure and sincere as a Christian, faithful to the church, sympathetic and helpful to the unfortunate, especially to the weak churches, deeply concerned for the cause of temperance, for the Christian Sabbath, for education, for philanthropy, morality, and all good causes.

He had been an ordained minister for seventy years, a longer period than any other of the Baptist clergymen in the United States. He was born in that part of Middle- boro, now Lakeville, Sept. 3, 1810. The house is still standing where he first saw the light.

He was the youngest of fourteen children in the family of Rev. Simeon Coombs. All the children with one exception reached maturity. His parents died when he was abont nine years of age and then commenced a struggle for educa- tion which was his youthful ambition. By extreme pru- dence and hard labor he saved enough to enter a school at

7

New Hampton, N. H., and later at Peirce Academy in Middleboro. While a student he seems to have received the call for his life work. His first pastorate after entering the ministry was at Norton where he gathered a strong soci- ety and erected a meeting-house. He was ordained in Nor- ton by Rev. Hervey Fittz in 1834.

He afterwards held pastorates in Mansfield, Mashpee, Re- hoboth, Shutesbury, and South Kingston, R. I. In 1849 he settled in Middleboro, and built the house on School street where he has since resided. Since living in this town he has preached in Pocasset, Rowe, Carver, Cummington, North Middleboro and supplied in other churches. The zealous interest which Mr. Coombs maintained for the cause of temperance was only second to his interest for the church. He believed the use of alcoholic liquor as a bev- erage to be an unmitigated evil and the open saloon the greatest curse of the nation.

There is owing to the Highway Department, from the state, and other smaller amounts, about $1,000, and in turn the town owes the state for its share (one-fourth) in the state highway construction of 1903, an amount which is not known as no account has been rendered to the town, but probably about $2,800.

There were some bills for the year 1904 which were not presented in time for payment in that year, and if an actual settlement had been possible it would have shown an ap- proximate balance.

The above constitutes the financial report of the different departments over which the Selectmen have control. Of the general work of the board, which may be of interest to the inhabitants or of use as reference the following is presented :

Early in the year we contracted with the Massachusetts Highway Commission to build 10,000 feet of macadam road for the sum of $6,872. This has been built within the ap- propriation and has been accepted. The state highway is now complete to the Rochester line, a distance of about nine miles.

No settlement has been made with the Massachusetts Highway Commission for work done in 1903. The work

23

was accepted by the commission Nov. 28th, 1904, and settlement will probably be made about Feb. 1st, after the statutory limit of 60 days for the filing of liens has passed.

One mile of five-inch macadam road has been built on Cushman and Miller streets, from the house of E. W. Thomas to the Rock depot at a money cost of about $4,000. Of this amount $3,300 was contributed by the Trustees under the will of Thomas S. Peirce, $500 by Charles N. Atwood, and smaller amounts and some stone by other in- terested parties.

We believe it should be the policy of the town to build town macadam roads wherever the abutters or interested persons will deliver the stone free to the crusher to an amount sufficient to build not less than one-half a mile.

Upon the assurance of the Trustees under the will of Thomas S. Peirce that they would reimburse the town, we solicited bids for the building of Frank street to subgrade and awarded the work to L. B. Pratt for the sum of $1,045, his bid being the lowest. The work has been completed and accepted and the town reimbursed.

On July 2nd the Selectmen gave to the Southern Massa- chusetts Telephone Co. a blanket franchise covering all the locations given to the different companies to that date, one provision being that it should place its wires underground, within the limits of the fire district upon request of the Selectmen. Since that date locations have been granted to said telephone company on the following streets, South, Spruce, Pine, Highland, Marion road, Long Point road, Walnut, Vaughan, Wood, Plympton, Fuller, Winter, Cedar, Soule, Oak, North, Nemasket, No. Main and Montello.

The Selectmen have made the following appointments in their order :

E. F. Witham, Burial Agent.

H. H. Robinson, Inspector of Alewives and Shad. John C. Chace, Supt. of Streets and Sewers.

Edgar D. Wood, Sealer of Weights and Measures.

James H. Russell, Member Board of Registrars.

George E. Hatch, Night Watch.

B. F. JJohnson, Keeper of Lockup.
