FLINT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
FOURTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF TRUSTEES.
We are pleased to announce a most successful year in our new Library Building, and we trust that the people who have enjoyed its conveniences and privileges, have borne in mind with grateful memory the names of those whose thoughtfulness and kindness have made this enjoyment possible.
The number of those who have taken books from the Library during the past year has increased, and the advan- tages of the reading-room have been seemingly highly appreciated.
The list of periodicals subscribed for last year has been increased by the addition of "Reviews of Reviews," "Forum" and "Electrical Review," while the "Boston Weekly Jour- nal" has been discontinued.
The income of the Flint Book Fund now having amounted to a considerable sum, an addition to the books in the Library will soon be made.
We are saddened by the thought of the great loss sus- tained by this community, and this library particularly in the sudden death, last September, of one of its trustees, Mr. Joseph A. Batchelder, who has been closely identified with its interests from the first.
In October, another member of the Board of Trustees, Mr. William M. Peabody, was removed by death.
He was chosen to take the place of Mr. W. A. Phelps, deceased, and he has always manifested a lively interest in whatever pertained to the prosperity of Flint Public Libra- ry, and was, as well as Mr. Batchelder, one of the origina- tors of the "Library Association" which was organized in 1865, but which, at the time of the presentation to the town of the sum of $1000 for a Free Library, by Hon. C. L. Flint, was merged into the Free Library, by the gift of its books, furniture, and funds in its treasury.
In closing,, we would say, we hope that the advantages af-
22
forded by Flint Free Library will be improved by all of our people, and that the youth particularly will persistently car- ry out the purpose of storing the mind with sound thought and useful information.
