We find, in closing the accounts of the town for the past year, an unusual amount of indebtedness, caused by the extraordinary circumstances in which the country has been involved. The pat- riotism and loyalty of our citizens has cheerfully responded to the demands of the nation, and has thereby necessarily caused an in- crease in the debt of the town.

The war expenses for the past year have been $16,468.08. Such an amount would never have been called for under other circumstances. Of this amount, $4,026.40 will be reimbursed by the State. It will be seen, by a careful examination, that the regular expenses of the town were smaller, by some hundreds of dollars, than they have been for the past four years, and every department has been kept within the limit of its appropriation.

In conclusion, we would tender our sincere thanks to the Select- men and Treasurer for the cheerful and courteous manner in which they have responded to our calls for assistance and explanation. We also again bear testimony to the faithful and correct manner in which the accounts of the town have been kept during the past year.

SAMUEL O. INGALLS, JOSEPH BRACKETT, Auditing Committee. DANIEL P. STIMPSON,

Swampscott, March 7, 1863.
