REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

To the School Committee of the Town of New Ashford:

Gentlemen:

I herewith submit my fifteenth annual report as Superintendent of Schools for the Town of New Ashford.

Personnel

There were three changes in personnel of the New Ashford school system during 1960. Charles E. Richardson, Sr., school custodian, resigned his position as of January 1, 1960. The School Committee made a concerted effort to find a replacement, but failing in this, Saul G. Love consented to provide janitorial service temporarily. Miss Catherine Raney of New Ashford was appointed to the position effective November 1, 1960.

On May 16, 1960 Mrs. Perry G. Whitman of Hancock was ap- pointed secretary to Dr. Joseph A. Wilk, superintendent of schools for the Mt. Greylock School Union, of which New Ashford is a member town. Mrs. Whitman succeeded Mrs. Lillian L. Potter of Adams who resigned her position as secretary to Dr. Wilk on April 15, 1960 to enter employment with the Pittsfield Visiting Nurse Association.

Mrs. Whitman, the former Jennie Gardiner, a native of Hancock, was graduated from the Pittsfield High School in 1937 and then began employment as a legal secretary and court stenographer in Pittsfield. Mrs. Whitman has been serving as Town Treasurer and Tax Collector for the Town of Hancock since February 1951 and has been organist and choir director at the Hancock Baptist Church for several years. On August 19, 1960 Mrs. Whitman was commissioned a Notary Public for a seven-year period.

Dr. H. Penuel F. Corbin of Williamstown succeeded Dr. Philip W. Mayo of Cheshire as school physician on June 23, 1960.

Purchase of New Equipment

The New Ashford School Committee purchased a new double pedestal teacher's desk in December. A new teacher's chair was also purchased. The steel desk is equipped with a hideaway type of shelf for the new Smith-Corona portable typewriter which the Committee purchased earlier in the year.

State Reimbursements for Education in 1960

The following amounts were paid to the Town of New Ashford by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as reimbursement to the Town for education purposes. The reimbursements go directly to the General Fund of the Town of New Ashford but tend to reduce by that amount the total cost of education for 1960."

School Census

Continuing the practice inaugurated in 1948, another complete census of the town's children was taken this year. The census figures for 1960 indicate that there are 66 children in the Town of New Ash- ford, an increase of 2 as compared with the figure of 64 in 1959. These census figures include all children of pre-school age as well as those of pupils now in attendance at the New Ashford School or as public or private tuition pupils at Williamstown and elsewhere.

Conclusion

In concluding this annual report, I wish to call attention to the excellent cooperation extended me during 1960 by Chairman Saul G. Love, Joseph A. St. Jacques, Secretary, and Boris DeBussey of the New Ashford School Committee, by the teacher, Mrs. Viola K. Nichols, and the several town officials with whom I have occasional school matters to discuss.

Respectfully submitted,

JOSEPH ADDISON WILK, Superintendent of Schools
