REPORT.

The Selectmen of the Town of Fairhaven herewith submit their annual town report for the consideration of the town.

It is the duty of those to whom office is entrusted, at the expiration of that trust, to report to those who gave them the authority by which they have acted, the results of their actions ; and also as citizens, having in common with all others the best interest of our town at heart, to suggest or to lay before the town, what may seem to them the best course to pursue for their future prosperity and welfare.

We thought at the commencement of the past year, as we have thought ever since our first election, that it was your intention to adopt the motto, "pay as you go," and it is with no small degree of satisfaction, that we are able to announce, that we have in all cases done so, and yet had a surplus to apply to the liquidation of our town debt, and we respect- fully suggest that the policy be continued, until the balance of our floating debt, $5900, be taken up.

While making necessary repairs at the Alms House, it seemed to us that the comfort of the inmates and those hav- ing them in charge, called for some alterations, and they have been begun, with a view of making it more comfortable for the aged and infirm during the cold weather, by placing them in rooms in the vicinity of the fires, and we suggest that these alterations be completed.

Chief Engineer Harrison, of the Fire Department, in his report to us, calls our attention to the lack of water in the east part of the village, and recommends that a reservoir be built there, which recommendation we endorse.

It seems necessary that some provision be made for getting the steam fire engine more promptly to fires, and in our

4

opinion this may best be done by increasing the number of men attached to it.

At the last annual town meeting quite a sum was granted for concrete sidewalks ; they have become by us an absolute necessity, and the comfort they give to the travelling public, seems to make ample returns for their cost. The work has been done by contract, and we think will compare favorably with other work of its kind.

There are four guide posts in town, situated respectively at the corner of Bridge and Adams streets, the corner of Bridge and New Boston road, the corner of New Boston and Mattapoisett roads, and at what is known as Seth Alden's corner. It might be well to have the names of some of the streets in the village so placed that strangers could more readily find their way.

In conclusion we call your attention to the fact, that if no great reductions are made in the appropriations, and the present policy continued in regard to all surplus, we may, at the end of three years more, have paid all our debts outside of the bonds. All of which is respectfully submitted.
