REPORT.
TO THE CITIZENS OF FAIRHAVEN :
The Committee respectfully submits the following report of the condition of the schools and school property of the town.
The exterior of the High School building is in good repair and the outbuildings in a fair condition. The upper hall has been recurtained and the ceiling tinted. The entire east wall must soon be replastered. The halls and stairways should be sheathed. Many of the desks are marred beyond utility by names, dates and initials, scored by the knives and pens of many generations. Chemistry being taught by practical ex- periments, large additions have been made to the apparatus and laboratory. Future expenditures for this purpose can be limited to $5.00 per term. The school has received, by the thoughtful generosity of Edmund Rodman, Esq., of New Bedford, a valuable collection of geological specimens which have been classified and arranged in a neat cabinet in the upper hall.
The principal is an enthusiast on the subject of educational methods and a specialist in certain branches taught. The recitationÈ™ denote good scholarship. It is but fair to say that the order in the school, as it appears to a visitant, is ad- mirable.
The former assistant was granted six months' leave of ab- sence, and the position is filled by a recent graduate from the

SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
advanced course of the Bridgewater Normal School. Her instruction is intelligent and thorough. The discipline of the class room is fair and improving. Order is enforced with a quiet dignity and persistence that will eventually win and hold the respect of the pupils.
The Grammar School is overcrowded. The methods of instruction are practical and sensible. The discipline of the school is perfect and the scholarship good.
Sixty-five Scholars are confined in the room of the Centre Primary School nominally under the charge of a single teacher. With energy and experience; understand- ing and applying the most improved methods; aided by a competent assistant each half-day; the teacher is yet overworked and the instruction consequently inadequate.
The South Primary School is ungraded. The methods discover a familiarity with modern ideas. The school is noisy, but orderly.
The Spring Street School is ungraded. There is a marked irregularity in attendance which adds to the work of the teacher and impairs the scholarship. The instruction, espe- cially in the primary grades, bears a closer resemblance to the Quincy methods than any school in town. It is unneces- sary, therefore, to add that the school is noisy, but orderly.
The building and outbuildings of the Oxford Street School are at present in fair condition. 3 The room is, however, small and overcrowded. A new floor is needed. The room is well lighted and ventilated, but unequally heated. This results from the faulty construction of the building. The teacher, self-trained by several years' experience, has meth- ods peculiarly her own. They are characterized by a disuse of text books in class exercise, and a thorough analysis of the pupils' knowledge of the subject matter rather than the text. The method of teaching geography is admirable.
