ANNUAL REPORT
SELECTMEN'S REPORT
To the Citizens of Dighton :
Nearly one-half of all the money raised by taxation for town purposes is required under present laws for the support. of the school department.
If the present agitation for larger facilities in towns for educational purposes should be adopted by the Lesislature, very large sums of money will be needed to carry them into effect far beyond our present ability to incur indebtedness. A decided protest by the people of the towns is the only effective method of stopping or modifying the many vision- ary, unprofitable and unwise projects brought before the Legislature for town government.
ROADS AND BRIDGES
The macadam on the south end of Williams Street has been extended about 1800 ft. to a point near the Flat Rock School House by the State and Town.
At the north end of Williams Street beginning at the Taunton line and running southerly, more than a mile of oil bound macadam road was built at a cost of about $16,500 by the State, County and Town, and an emergency cost of about $500 was incurred to increase the width of the road to protect public travel, there being no wall on the sides of the road. A survey of the remaining dirt section of this street has been made by the State Engineers and it is proposed to complete this street next summer to the Swansea line.
Broad Cove Bridge was found to be in a dangerous con- dition, new sleepers and plank needed. Repairs were made by the Fred T. Ley Co., at a cost of $1214.44.
The first built macadam road in North Dighton needs resurfacing and added drainage.
8
ANNUAL REPORT
This kind of road will not bear neglect, patching and oiling properly applied when first needed is a paying in- vestment.
For your consideration relative to making improve- ments we have made measurements of the following streets: Williams Street to Swansea line 1 and 6/10 mile Hart from Pleasant to Elm south to macadam 9/10 mile
Center from macadam to Williams
1 and 3/10 mile
Middle to Tremont and Tremont to Forest 1 and 3/10 mile
Main from Elm to Williams 1 and 6/10 mile 5,220 feet
Forest Street
At present prices, a 15 foot road water bound will cost three dollars a running foot, oil about seventy cents more.
We have received the following notice from the Depart- ment of Conservation which we trust the owners of dogs will heed if they desire to keep them.
DOG NOTICE.
January, 24, 1922. To Town and City Authorities :
Owing to the rapidly increasing prevalence of rabies in several sections of the State, and the fact that in a majority of instances the source of an outbreak in a community is found to be a stray, unlicensed, collarless dog, we are re- spectfully requesting all town and city authorities to at once call the attention of their constables and police officers to the necessity of a rigid enforcement of all dog laws, especially those which require all unlicensed and collarless dogs to be killed.
The laws referring to dogs are to be found in Chapter 140 of the General Laws, sections 137 to 175, inclusive.
.
9
ANNUAL REPORT
The sections particularly applicable to the present em- ergency are 151, 152, 153, 167, 168, 169.
We feel that prompt action by municipal authorities as advised will obviate the necessity of a state-wide quaran- tine of all dogs, a measure which causes great inconvenience, trouble and expense to the dog owners and is "hard on the dogs."
Respectfully yours,
LESTER H. HOWARD,
Director.
STATE AID.
Four veterans drawing from $4.00 to $6.00 per month, three widows $4.00 per month, Soldier's Relief one drawing $5.00 per month, one first part of the year $20.00.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES S. CHASE, GEO. B. GLIDDEN, LYMAN E. BRIGGS,
Selectmen of Dighton
Dighton, Dec. 31, 1921.
