SELECTMEN'S REPORT
To the Inhabitants of Dighton :-
The Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, have returned the old state road on Pleas- ant Street and a section of Somerset Avenue to the jurisdiction of the Town.
It is hoped that in the near future the rest of Somerset Avenue will be improved or a new route laid out and constructed. Public travel needs and demands a sixty or eighty foot road to properly serve this section between Fall River and Boston. We be- lieve it will not be judicious or economical to meet the requirements of public travel by widening the rest of crooked Somerset Avenue, move houses, cut beauti- ful shade trees, disturb lawns, etc.
The section of new State Highway completed last year of about seven (7) miles in Somerset and Dighton is a vivid illustration of what should be done with the section under consideration.
We believe the problem can best be solved by building a new road starting on Somerset Avenue a few rods south of its junction with Elm Street, and branching westerly onto private land, mostly dry pas- ture and woodland, crossing Center and Tremont Streets to Three Mile River and the Dighton-Taunton boundary line, crossing the small stream running on about the same kind of land to a point about half way between Somerset Avenue and Dighton Avenue in Taunton to Railroad Avenue, thence across the ave- nue, joining Dighton Avenue near its junction with the Baker Road, and running northerly to Winthrop Street, and on through the western outskirts of the City of Taunton to join the Boston Road.

ANNUAL REPORT
HIGHWAYS
Snowstorms early in the year depleated the an- nual appropriation for highways nearly one-half, mak- ing it necessary to draw a large part of the emergency fund for needed repairs.
Heavy travel over B. & D. drawbridge has made it necessary to make extensive repairs.
Beter fire protection has been secured by the addition of a power pump to the equipment and a large supply of hose.
WATER
During the past thirty (30) years unsuccessful attempts have been made to furnish the Town with a water system. In 1914 the Town of Somerset se- cured legislation to supply the Town with water, tak- ing water from a stream in Swansea. This year the Act was amended to secure water from the ample water shed in Dighton and to furnish water at the same rates charged in Somerset to such inhabitants of Dighton as live in the vicinity of the pipe line.
If it is decided to take water only from the direct pipe line a water district will have to be formed and necessary legislation secured.
Parts of the Town other than that on the direct pipe line may be supplied with water provided the Town does its own construction.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES S. CHASE, GEO. B. GLIDDEN, LYMAN E. BRIGGS, Selectmen of Dighton.
