BOARD OF SELECTMEN
To the Citizens of Dighton :
On May 2, less than two months from the day he retired as Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, the Hon. Charles Sydney Chace known far and wide as "The Grand Old Man of Dighton," passed on at the age of 93 years, 3 months, and 22 days, having served the town in one capacity or another for over fifty years. His death was a very real loss to the town as well as to his host of friends.
In deepening the channel in the Taunton River, the United States Government will take from six to eight feet from the river bed at the draw opening of the Dighton-Berkley Bridge. This will necessitate extensive re-enforcing at the centre pier and also at the east abutment. It is hoped that while this work is being done, the bridge can be motorized, thus saving materially the time required for operating.
The citizens of this town may consider themselves very fortunate that the tax rate for 1933 was held to $27.50. This was only accomplished by following the recommendation of the Finance Committee for the strictest economies. We have been able to meet all payments without going into debt and while business has shown improvement in some lines, the policy of keeping expenses to the minimum must be continued in 1934. We urge all citizens to bear this in mind and assist the town officers in keeping the town's expenses to the lowest possible figure.
Respectfully submitted, GEORGE B. GLIDDEN LYMAN E. BRIGGS JOHN BOLGER
Selectmen of Dighton.

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH
To the Citizens of Dighton :
The Town has been fortunate in not having had an epidemic of any sort during the past year. Scattered cases of communi- cable diseases have occurred but prompt recognition and im- mediate isolation have prevented spreading.
This Board very much appreciates the faithful and efficient services of our Town Nurse, Mrs. Leila P. Hoard, and also those of Mrs. Myrtle Cole who served as Town Nurse while Mrs. Hoard underwent a serious operation which fortunately resulted most satisfactorily. The work of these two women is responsible to a great extent for the excellence of our health record for 1933.
We are also very much indebted to the physicians, the teachers, and the parents who have cooperated with this Board in such a whole-hearted manner.
The report of the Town Nurse will give details of much of the health work during the past year.
Respectfully submitted
GEORGE B. GLIDDEN LYMAN E. BRIGGS JOHN BOLGER

ANNUAL REPORT
BOARD OF PUBLIC WELFARE
To the Citizens of Dighton :
This year the Board of Public Welfare has been called upon to a greater extent than ever before in the history of the town. The Board has done its best to properly investigate all cases and in preventing undue hardship to see that the town's money was wisely spent. We have had complaints that some were being helped who did not require it. While investiga- tions so far have revealed but one or two such cases, it should be born in mind that applying for and accepting town aid by those not in need is a criminal offence and any such case is liable to prosecution.
During the past year the Welfare Department has received much needed help from the Government, enabling it to carry on within the amount appropriated, but we cannot count upon this help during 1934. Those on the welfare list having available land are urged and expected to plan to lay in vege- tables for next winter and thus assist in keeping down the expenses of this Board.
We are very much indebted to Mrs. Hoard and Mrs. Cole for their services and hearty cooperation in our welfare work.
Details of expenses of this Department will be found in the auditor's report.
Respectfully submitted,
GEORGE B. GLIDDEN LYMAN E. BRIGGS JOHN BOLGER

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF TOWN NURSE 1933
Board of Selectmen and Board of Health,
Dighton, Massachusetts.
Gentlemen ;
This past year has found our town quite free from contagious diseases. There were two cases of Diphtheria reported, but no Measles or Scarlet Fever. There was a small number of cases of both Whooping Cough and Chicken Pox.
Two hundred and ninety-three children were given Toxin- Anti-toxin for Diptheria.
A great number of people this past year have taken advan- tage of the Visiting Nurse Service that both the Metropolitan and John Hancock Insurance Companies give. Any informa- tion as to this service will be glady given by the Board of Health or the agents of either of these companies.
Welfare cases reached a new peak during this past year. The demands from unfortunate and needy families and in- dividuals makes necessary a great deal of investigations to give the wisest form of relief and make the proper adjustments.
I wish to thank, at this time, the Mount Hope Finishing Company for cloth that is used to such great advantage in the welfare work. And, I would like to thank all those who have contributed clothing, it is always appreciated and helps so much.
I want also to express my gratitude to the town officials and all those who have so kindly aided in so many ways.
The following is a list of medical and surgical cases, re- ceiving care and the number of visits made.
