SCHOOLS.

The appropriations for schools will be nearly expended, including one hundred dollars from the Pratt Fund.

The schools will require the same appropriation from the Town as last year.

POOR.

The cost of the poor has been one hundred and twenty-seven dollars and forty cents in excess of last year. This expense is due in a part to the increased cost in the case of Mrs. Frieze, and the Lucas family in Wareham. The tramps have increased from one hundred and eighty-one last year to three hundred and six the present year.

The fuel for the Almshouse has been taken from the Town Farm, which was cut last year and drawn to the house. The cost of the poor the coming year will require an increased appropriation.

16

HIGHWAYS.

The expenditures by the Surveyors have been, on the whole, satisfactory. The roads will require the same appropriation as last year.

BRIDGES.

Fresh Meadow Bridge has been repaired in a thorough man- ner so that it will require little or no repairs for some years. The balance of the appropriation will be sufficient to keep the bridges in repair another year.

REPAIRS OF SCHOOLHOUSES.

The appropriation of fifty dollars would have proved insuffi- cient, but for a balance from last year. The school-houses in Districts Nos .. 2 and 3 have been new seated with modern furniture, making them neat in appearance and comfortable for the scholars. The house in No. 3 has been repaired and put in good condition, except that it needs painting inside. The house in No. 1 needs repairing, and some better provision made for the Primary school in the dis- trict. It is thought by some that the school-houses need painting. Should the town think best to make other than ordinary repairs, they will need a special appropriation for the same. 1

17

NEW ROAD.

The road widened and straightened by the Selectmen at Dunham's Hill has been built, making great improvement, and gives good satisfaction.

It will be seen by the report that the Town has not held its own, financially, the past year, so that we shall need an increased appropriation the coming year. It has been found necessary to borrow $2,000.00 in anticipation of the payment of taxes.

APPROPRIATIONS FOR 1880.

The following appropriations are recommended by the Selectmen :

Support of schools

$1,200 00

Poor

1,500 00

Repair of highways 1,200 00

Repair of school-houses

50 00

Miscellaneous 600 00

$4,550 00

We shall probably receive from corporation and bank tax. 870 00

Leaving a balance to be assessed upon the Town of $3,680 00
