APPROPRIATIONS FOR 1881.

The following appropriations will be required the coming

year.

Schools.

$1,200 00

Repair of highways.

1,200 00

Poor. 2,000 00

Incidental 600 00

$5,000 00

We shall probably receive from corporation and national bank tax, 900 00

Leaving a balance to be assessed on the town of .... $4,100 00

POOR.

The expense of the poor has been $381.86 in excess of the appropriation, and $276.79 above last year, and must continue large another year. The cost at the almshouse has been $574.93, or about $1.95 per week each, and about $1.00 for provisions.

The inmates have been cared for in the best manner, and given every comfort their circumstances require.

Miss Jemima Lucas has been boarded at a cost of $3.00 per week. S. W. Thomas has two small children, is unable to work and receives $2.00 per week and such clothing as his circumstances require.

Mrs. John Thomas, with four small children, one dollar and a half per week.

Mr. John Thomas receives one dollar during the cold weather.

17

The Wrightingtons have been aided as circumstances require. We ought to be relieved of the support of the Wrightington children, but have thus far been unable to accomplish it, on account of their past bringing up. If they continue to improve, it is to be hoped homes will soon be found for them.

1

Hosea B. Morse was injured on the railroad, taken to the hospital, and was laid up through the fall and winter. We have been obliged to help him and his family, but expect he will soon be able to provide for them.

Manoah Hurd was sent to the Lunatic Hospital from Boston. At last accounts he was improving, with prospect of recovery.

The Lucas families are costing too much, and we should be glad to devise some means to lessen the cost.

Mrs. Kilroy, who was taken to the Almshouse, has been pro- vided for without cost to the Town.

We were called upon to provide for Bessie Jodrey until she could be removed to the State Almshouse. The bill has been sent to the State, but we have received no return.

We have been called upon to provide for five children of Maria Bent of Falmouth. If we are obliged to accept them, they must be provided for until homes can be found. The youngest is two or three weeks old.

2

18

TAXES.

In assessing taxes, there was found to be property in the hands of Gerard Tobey, Assignee, about which there was some doubt as to where it should be taxed. We decided to tax it. Mr. Tobey is waiting the decision of the court before paying it.

BRIDGES.

The bridges are in good repair, and will need but little expended on them the coming year.

SCHOOLS.

A school-house has been provided for the Primary School in District No. 1. Should the Town vote any repairs, there will be needed an appropriation for the same. It will be seen that the school appropriation is nearly all expended.

GUIDE BOARDS.

The guide boards are in good repair. We have been called upon to erect new ones near John Bent's mill and the dwelling- house of Lemuel Bump.

19
