APPROPRIATIONS.
The following appropriations are called for to pay current expenses the ensuing year : -
Schools
$1,200 00
Poor
1,300 00
Highways 1,200 00
Bridges . 100 00
Removal of snow 125 00
School-houses and incidentals
50 00
Incidental Town expenses
650 00
Total
$4,625 00
Estimated bank and corporation tax 1,000 00
If appropriated, sum to be assessed $3,625 00
SCHOOLS.
The school account stands overdrawn to the amount of $45.40, with two schools yet only partially paid, which will still increase an overdrawn account. But this is a matter for the considera- tion of the Committee. In the absence of any recommendation from the School Committee, we call for the same appropriation as last year, believing that our people are satisfied with the amount of schooling heretefore afforded, when the money is judiciously expended.
17
POOR.
One thousand three hundred dollars is called for to meet cur- rent expenses of the poor ; and unless unforeseen large bills are launched upon us, it will be amply sufficient. It has been our endeavor the past year to draw the lines taut in this account, where there would be no chafing. The expenses at the Alms- house are large, considering the number supported there, and cannot be otherwise in a small town.
Manoah Hurd is now provided for at the Soldiers' Home, and two of the Benson children have been sent to the Wander- ers' Home, free of expense to us.
The net expense of supporting the poor the past year is $1,266.90 ; the balance, $32.50, is to be reimbursed by Plymouth.
HIGHWAYS.
Your Selectmen, hearing of no special complaint as to the inefficiency of the highways, ask for the same appropriation as last year, $1,200.00
BRIDGES.
All our large bridges are believed to be in good condition. But there are some small ones to be built anew or repaired. $100.00 is called for.
REPAIR OF SCHOOL-HOUSES AND INCIDENTALS.
As the duty of keeping the school-houses in repair now de- volves upon the School Committee, we know very little of their condition. An appropriation of $50.00 is thought to be ample, unless it will be found necessary to re-shingle or paint some of them. The Committee will be heard in this matter.
3
18
REMOVAL OF SNOW FROM HIGHWAYS.
An appropriation of $125.00 is called for and considered ample, unless heavy snows fall hereafter, which, of course, will disturb our estimate.
INCIDENTAL TOWN EXPENSES.
This account stands overdrawn $81.63. An appropriation of $650.00 we think will be required the ensuing year.
By reference to our assets and liabilities it will be seen that we now have a balance in favor of the Town a little above $2,700.00, or nearly $1,000.00 more than last year.
By this fortunate turn of circumstances, and with the adop- tion of our recommended appropriations, we confidently assure tax-payers that a reduction of from 10 to 15 per cent. from last year's rate can be expected this year.
Respectfully submitted,
ANDREW GRIFFITH, Selectmen ALBERT T. SHURTLEFF, of
NELSON SHERMAN, Carver.
