APPROPRIATIONS.
The following appropriations are recommended to meet current expenses the ensuing year :-
Schools, - -
$1,200.00
Poor,
1,400.00 -
Highways, -
1,200.00
Bridges, - -
75.00
Repair of school-houses and incidentals 100.00
Removal of snow from highways, 35.00
Incidental town expenses, 550.00
Total,
$4,560.00
Estimated bank and corporation tax, $1,000.00
If appropriated, sum to be assessed $3,560.00
SCHOOLS.
There is an undrawn balance of $47.03 of the appro- priation, with demands of about $100.00 for teachers' wag- es yet to come in. It will be seen that about one-half of said demand must be /met from the next appropriation. The School Committee have, as we are informed, present- ed a claim against Middleboro for $150.00, with a strong assurance of its being allowed, when, it will be available to meet expenses in this account. $1.200.00 is recom- mended to be appropriated as heretofore.
19
HIGHWAYS.
$1,200.00 is recommended for the repair of highways, as for several years past.
BRIDGES.
We recommend $75.00 for the repair of bridges, which is thought ample with a balance from 1883 of $38.53 unexpended.
SNOW.
Fortunately but very little snow has fallen this winter to require removal. From what we can learn, $35.00 will meet the expense, also a deficiency of about $10.00 in last year's account. A heavy snow-fall before Town Meeting would of course disturb this estimate.
REPAIR OF SCHOOL-HOUSES AND INCIDEN- TALS.
As no sum has been recommended by the Committee to meet expenses in this account, considering the liberal outlay of last year, we call for $100.00 this year.
POOR.
There has been quite a large increase in the expenses of this account the past year, a part of which may be con- sidered extraordinary and not likely to occur soon. For instance, it was found necessary to sink a new well, not only to accommodate the Almshouse, but the two adjacent schools, at a cost of $75.45 ; also, repairs of the buildings were made at an expense of $31.24; repairs of Martha Bump's house, cost $17.02, a total of $123.71.
The aid rendered to E. Douglass and T. Shurtleff's
20
family, amounting to $183.64, is paid by other towns, thus making the net expense of Poor, $1,485.27.
The claim of Dr. Cornish against the town, amounts to $151.25, and is for doctoring Asa Wrightington's and John Thomas' family from 1879 to 1881.
After aiding Foster Shaw for 24 years, there is a good prospect of his taking care of himself soon.
We recommend an appropriation of $1,400.00 to meet expenses in this account, which was overdrawn last year $75.52.
INCIDENTAL TOWN EXPENSES.
There being quite a large unexpended balance in this account, we ask for $550.00 to meet expenses of the ensu- ing year.
By reference to our assets and liabilities, it will be seen that we have a balance of about $2,900.00 in favor of the town, or nearly $200.00 more than last year.
The assets are nearly correct, while the liabilities are partly based upon estimates. In Thomas Cobb's account as Collector, will be seen an error rectified. It was made in amount of taxes of 1881, brought forward to 1882.
Respectfully submitted,
ANDREW GRIFFITH, Selectmen ALBERT T. SHURTLEFF, of
NELSON SHERMAN, Carver.
