I6
SCHOOLS.
There is an undrawn balance in this account of $299 .- 96, with three schools in operation at the time of closing accounts. About $250.00 will be required to meet the ex- pense of said schools, leaving unexpended $50.00 in the treasury. In the absence of any recommendation from the committee, the same sum appropriated last year is called for this year.
HIGHWAYS.
$1200. is called for to keep the highways in repair the ensuing year, which sum seems ample, from the fact that no complaints have reached the authorities from pub- lic travel.
BRIDGES.
This account is overdrawn $54.32 and as the bridge at Pope's Point is to be entirely rebuilt this season, and as it seems necessary that the crossing near S. W. Gould's should be widened, together with other ordinary repairs, it is thought that $250.00 will be required to meet the ex- penses, which is recommended.
SNOW.
No appropriation is called for in this account, unless a heavy snow-fall should take place before the annual meet- ing.
REPAIRS OF SCHOOL-HOUSES AND SCHOOL INCIDENTALS.
There is a deficiency in this account of $475.88, owing mainly to a law passed by the last Legislature
17
compelling towns to furnish school books. An appropri- ation of $800 at least will be required the present year, which is recommended.
POOR.
No extraordinary expenses have occurred in this ac- count. Notwithstanding that the town assumed the pay- ment of a large bill ($151.25) at the opening of the year, the cost of our Poor is a little less than last year. The personal property of Eben and Barton Fuller having been converted into cash and turned into the town treasury, leaves a surplus of $378.43 in this account, which with an appropriation of $1250. is thought sufficient for the ensu- ing year, and is recommended.
The cost of supporting the inmates of our Almshouse is $1.91 per week. The net cost of the Poor to the town is $1,384 ; the balance will be refunded.
INCIDENTAL TOWN EXPENSES.
There is a surplus of $505.15 in this account, owing mainly to a large increase in receipts from land sold, tax sales, and increase of corporation tax. The expenses however have diminished somewhat. No appropriation is called for this year.
By a glance at our report, it will be seen that the ap- propriations of last year, upon the whole, more than paid expenses, thus increasing our assets correspondingly over last year, and in round numbers we may consider our town $500. better off.
It will also be noticed that we found no occasion to hire money, and with a surplus of nearly $3,500 cash and
18
its equivalent in the town treasury, we hope to get through another year without borrowing.
In conclusion we might add, that our County tax will be higher this year, with our State tax about the same ; then with the adoption of our recommended appropriations our tax rate would be slightly reduced.
Respectfully submitted,
ANDREW GRIFFITH, ALBERT T. SHURTLEFF, NELSON SHERMAN, Carver.
