I6
SCHOOLS.
There remains in the treasury a balance of $397.82 in this account, with five schools in operation at the time of closing our accounts. To pay the expense of these schools, nearly the whole sum will be required.
HIGHWAYS.
The same sum appropriated last year, $1200.00 is thought to be sufficient this year. Ten per cent. of the sum appropriated last year, remains in the treasury, and is supposed not to have been expended.
BRIDGES.
There is a deficiency of $87.72 in this account. We think $225.00 is required to meet this deficiency and pay expenses the year ensuing.
SNOW.
There is a balance of $10.54 unexpended in this ac- count. In addition to this, $75.00 is believed to be ample to pay expenses.
REPAIRS OF SCHOOL-HOUSES.
A balance of $140.19 remains unexpended in this account, and as there are some needed repairs to be made in Districts No. I and 4, $100.00 is called for by appro- priation.
SCHOOL BOOKS AND SCHOOL-ROOM FUR- NISHINGS.
There is a deficiency of $19.58 in this account, and as the book expense seems to be quite heavy, we recommend $150.00 as the sum to appropriate.
17
POOR.
There is an undrawn balance in this account of $452.11, owing in part to having more outstanding bills than usual at settlement. An apppropriation of $1100.00 is thought sufficient this year. The heavy expense in case of S. J. Ham at New Bedford, was occasioned by sickness and death in his family. The cost of supporting our inmates of the Almshouse including the burial expen- ses of three, is $2.52 per week.
The net cost of supporting our Poor, is $1321.57, in- cluded in this is the lodging and feeding of 101 tramps.
INCIDENTAL TOWN EXPENSES.
A balance of $164.26 remains in the treasury to the credit of this account. An apppropriation of $400.00 is asked for in addition to meet the expenses the ensuing year.
Nothing has occurred to disturb our estimates at the opening of year, consequently the appropriations were upon the whole, ample to pay the town charges, leaving the assets $3,500.00 over the liabilities as one year ago.
We found no occasion to borrow money the past year, and none will be needed the coming year, unless unusual appropriations are made at the next town meeting.
Perhaps an explanation is due in relation to the tax uncollected on bills of 1879. The balance uncollected is wholly against Matthias Ellis, and cannot be collected owing to litigation, but the chances are that ultimately it will be settled.
In conclusion, Mr. Sherman of the Board of Select, men, desires to express his thanks to the people of Carver
18
for the generous support he has received for the past four years, but owing to reasons purly personal, declines a re-election.
Respectfully submitted,
ANDREW GRIFFITH, ALBERT T. SHURTLEFF, NELSON SHERMAN,
Selectmen of Carver.
